Overview
EN IEC 60974-1:2022/A12:2023 is an important European amendment focusing on arc welding equipment, specifically addressing welding power sources. Prepared by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC), this amendment updates the existing EN IEC 60974-1:2022 standard, ensuring it aligns with the latest safety, performance, and regulatory requirements for electric welding power sources.
This standard is crucial for manufacturers, suppliers, and users of arc welding power sources across Europe, facilitating harmonized safety and technical criteria while supporting compliance with the Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU. It offers a voluntary means for demonstrating conformity with EU safety objectives governing electrical equipment designed for use within certain voltage limits.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
The document covers welding power sources as part of the arc welding equipment family, providing normative specifications that enhance safety, operational reliability, and electromagnetic compatibility.Safety Objectives Compliance
EN IEC 60974-1:2022/A12:2023 explicitly outlines the relationship with Directive 2014/35/EU, ensuring that compliance with this standard gives presumption of conformity with key safety objectives, such as:- Electrical insulation and protection
- Prevention of electric shock hazards
- Electromagnetic field safety considerations
- Functional and operational safety aspects
National Level Implementation
CENELEC members, including most European countries, are required to adopt this amendment into their national standards by September 2024 and withdraw conflicting standards by September 2026, ensuring unified regulations across member states.Test and Maintenance Guidelines
Although some aspects like periodic maintenance testing are referenced as covered in separate standards, this amendment supports comprehensive technical specification updates relevant for periodic inspection and repair processes.Multilingual Availability
Official versions are published in English, French, and German, ensuring accessibility for key European languages and allowing member states to provide translations with equivalent legal standing.
Applications
Welding Equipment Manufacturers
Producers of welding power sources rely on this standard to design products that meet stringent European safety and operational criteria, facilitating market access throughout Europe.Quality Assurance and Certification Bodies
Testing laboratories and certification agencies use this standard as a benchmark for safety assessments and approvals of welding power sources, empowering consistent product evaluation.Safety Inspectors and Maintenance Technicians
Professionals responsible for inspecting arc welding equipment benefit from the technical clarity on safety requirements, ensuring ongoing equipment reliability and regulatory compliance.Regulatory Authorities
National electrotechnical committees and regulatory agencies implement and enforce this standard to harmonize the safety regulation of welding power sources within their jurisdictions.
