Overview

EN IEC 60974-1:2022/A11:2022 is a European harmonized standard developed by CLC/TC 26 “Electric Welding” that specifies safety and performance requirements for welding power sources and plasma cutting systems. This amendment aligns with EU Ecodesign requirements under Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/1784 and applies primarily to industrial and professional arc welding equipment supplied by voltages up to 1,000 V, including battery-powered and mechanically driven power sources. It excludes limited duty units designed mainly for laymen.

This standard ensures manufacturers comply with the European Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU) and relevant ecodesign regulations by providing guidelines on equipment identification, efficiency measurements, and display indications. The harmonized approach facilitates free market access within the EU and EFTA while prioritizing safety, resource efficiency, and environmental considerations.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application

    • Covers welding power sources and allied processes such as arc cutting and arc spraying for professional and industrial use.
    • Applies to power supplies up to 1,000 V AC or DC, including battery supplies.
    • Excludes consumer-level limited duty units covered under IEC 60974-6.
    • Specifies that electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements are addressed separately.
  • Safety Requirements

    • Defines parameters for voltage, current limits, and hazard reducing devices to ensure operator safety.
    • Requires clear marking on rating plates, including the year of manufacture, which can be provided via traceability codes or manufacturer web tools as per EU Regulation 2019/1784.
  • Performance and Efficiency

    • Details measurement methods for power efficiency and idle power consumption in normative Annex M.
    • Introduces mandatory display requirements including wire-feed speed to indicate filler material usage, meeting ecodesign information requirements.
  • Identification and Marking

    • Specifies identification details for welding power sources, including manufacturing date and safety symbols visible on the front of equipment.
  • Relation to EU Directives and Regulations

    • Complies with the EU Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU) and Ecodesign Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/1784.
    • Provides presumption of conformity when cited in the Official Journal of the European Union.
    • Emphasizes ongoing compliance and updates based on evolving legislation.
