• splošne zahteve, kot so opredeljene v standardu IEC 60793-2;
• posebne zahteve, ki so skupne večrodnim vlaknom kategorije A2 iz tega standarda in so navedene v točki 3;
• posebne zahteve, ki veljajo za posamezne podkategorije ali posebne načine uporabe in so opredeljene v normativnih dodatkih o skupinski specifikaciji.

Overview
EN 60793-2-20:2016 (adoption of IEC 60793-2-20:2015) is the European sectional product specification for category A2 multimode fibres (sub‑categories A2a, A2b, A2c). It defines the dimensional, mechanical, transmission and environmental requirements for multimode optical fibres intended for use in information transmission equipment and optical fibre cables (typically for links up to about 2 km). This third edition is a technical revision of the 2009 edition and includes notable updates such as replacing Nath with NAff and clarified test‑specimen lengths and measurement details for core diameter and NAff measurements.
Key topics
- Scope & structure
- Applies to A2a, A2b, A2c multimode fibres and complements the general requirements in EN/IEC 60793‑2.
- Particular requirements for each sub‑category are given in normative annexes (AA, BB, CC).
- Dimensional requirements
- Core/cladding/coating geometry and tolerances; referenced measurement methods (see IEC 60793‑1‑20/21).
- Mechanical requirements
- Tensile, proof and handling tests; test methods referenced from Part 1 specifications.
- Transmission requirements
- Attenuation, bandwidth and numerical aperture (NAff) measurements and limits; measurement procedures are referenced (e.g., IEC 60793‑1‑40/41/43).
- Environmental requirements
- Exposure and ageing tests, damp/heat/temperature cycling and their impact on optical performance.
- Test details
- Tables list the relevant attributes and the specific test methods required for compliance; specimen length and measurement details are specified for repeatability.
Applications
- Specifying and qualifying multimode fibres used in:
- Short‑reach networks (campus, enterprise, data center interconnects) - typically up to 2 km
- Optical fibre cables and patchcords
- Information transmission equipment that integrates multimode fibre links
- Useful for product development, quality control, manufacturing acceptance, procurement and compliance documentation.
Who should use this standard
- Fibre manufacturers and material suppliers
- Cable designers and assemblers
- Test laboratories and QA teams performing optical/mechanical testing
- System integrators, network designers, procurement and compliance engineers
Related standards
- IEC/EN 60793‑2 (General product specifications)
- IEC 60793‑1‑20, ‑1‑21, ‑1‑30, ‑1‑31, ‑1‑40, ‑1‑41, ‑1‑43 (measurement methods for geometry, attenuation, bandwidth, NAff, mechanical tests)
- Referencing these ensures consistent test methods and traceable results.
This standard is essential when you need authoritative, repeatable specifications and test methods for category A2 multimode fibres used in short‑reach optical links and cable products.

FOREWORD 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations. 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any misinterpretation by any end user. 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter. 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any services carried out by independent certification bodies. 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication. 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
