Optical fibres - Part 1-50: Measurement methods and test procedures - Damp heat (steady state) tests
IEC 60793-1-50:2014 provides a practical method for evaluating fibre performance in a defined environment. The purpose of this standard is to determine the suitability of optical fibre sub-category A1a to A1d multimode fibres and class B and C single-mode fibres to withstand the environmental condition of high humidity and high temperature which may occur in actual use, storage and/or transport. The test is primarily intended to permit the observation of effects of high humidity at constant temperature over a given period. This procedure is conducted in accordance with IEC 60068-2-78, Test Cab. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition, published in 2001, and constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - harmonization of the content with sectional specifications of relevant fibre types; - extension of the applicability of the standard to class C single-mode fibres. Keywords: evaluating fibre performance, sub-category A1a to A1d multimode fibres, class B and C single-mode fibres, high humidity and high temperature

Overview
EN 60793-1-50:2015 (equivalent to IEC 60793-1-50:2014) specifies a practical, repeatable method for evaluating fibre performance under prolonged high humidity and high temperature (damp heat, steady state). The standard is intended to determine the suitability of optical fibres - specifically sub-category A1a to A1d multimode fibres and class B and C single‑mode fibres - to withstand environmental conditions encountered in actual use, storage or transport. The test follows the environmental procedure of IEC 60068-2-78 (Test Cab).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Assessment of effects of high humidity at constant high temperature on optical and mechanical properties of specified fibre categories.
- Test conditions: Conducted in accordance with IEC 60068-2-78. Typical conditioning specified in this standard is +85 °C, 85% relative humidity for 30 days (temperature, humidity and exposure time are defined in the procedure).
- Specimen preparation and sampling:
- Minimum specimen lengths: ≥ 1 000 m for A1a–A1d multimode; ≥ 2 000 m for class B and C single‑mode (to ensure measurement repeatability).
- Coiling recommendations: loosely coiled, dusted (e.g., talcum) so coils move freely; minimum bend diameter 150 mm to avoid macro‑bends.
- Control specimens: sections removed before test for baseline mechanical comparisons.
- Apparatus:
- Environmental chamber capable of maintaining specified temperature and humidity with homogeneous conditions and no condensation dripping on specimens.
- Humidifier using de‑mineralized or de‑ionized water to avoid contamination.
- Additional measurement equipment as required for optical and mechanical tests.
- Measurements:
- Optical attenuation measurements before, during (when stabilized) and after conditioning using the methods referenced in IEC 60793‑1‑40 (insertion loss or backscattering).
- Mechanical tests per relevant IEC measurement procedures.
- Harmonization and applicability: This edition harmonizes content with sectional product specifications and extends applicability to class C single‑mode fibres.
Applications and users
- Fibre manufacturers: product qualification, R&D and quality control for humidity/temperature robustness.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies: standardized method for repeatable damp‑heat testing.
- Procurement/specification authors and network operators: verifying suitability of fibres for harsh environments, storage and transport conditions.
- Component designers and integrators: assessing reliability impact of damp heat on optical performance.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
