Overview

EN 61169-43:2013 (IEC 61169-43:2013) is a sectional specification for RBMA series blind-mating RF coaxial connectors. It provides rules and guidance for preparing detail specifications (DS) for 50 Ω RBMA connectors with threaded coupling and an operating frequency limit up to 12.4 GHz. The standard applies to connectors used with RF cables or micro-striplines in wireless, microwave, telecommunication and related fields, and it has been adopted as a CENELEC/CLC European Standard.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and purpose: Rules for drafting detail specifications for RBMA series connectors and recommended performance characteristics.
  • Mating-face dimensions: Prescribes dimensions for general connectors (Grade 2) and standard test connectors (Grade 0) to ensure interchangeability and consistent blind-mating behavior.
  • Gauging information: Defines gauge pin and outer-contact gauges to verify connector acceptability during inspection and assembly.
  • Mounting and alignment: Limits for permissible radial and axial misalignment, and guidance for rigid vs. floating mounting and self-alignment during blind mating.
  • Test selection and procedures: Selects applicable tests from IEC 61169-1 (generic RF connector tests) and specifies acceptance and periodic test schedules (see Tables 8 and 9) for assessment levels M and H.
  • Quality assessment: Guidance on quality conformance inspection, qualification approval and maintenance, and the drafting of blank detail-spec pro‑forma for RBMA connectors.
  • Reference planes and dimensional drawings: Includes figures and tables for critical dimensions, reference planes and test connector details.

Applications and who uses it

  • Connector designers and manufacturers use EN 61169-43 to prepare detail specifications, set tolerances, design gauging, and define qualification/test plans for RBMA products.
  • Test laboratories and quality engineers apply the document’s test schedules and inspection requirements for acceptance and periodic testing at assessment levels M and H.
  • System integrators and procurement teams in wireless, microwave, telecom, aerospace and defense reference the standard to ensure component interoperability and reliable blind-mating performance in modules and panels.
  • Regulatory and certification bodies may reference the standard when assessing RF connector compliance and interchangeability.

Related standards

  • IEC 61169-1: Generic specification for radio-frequency connectors - general requirements and measuring methods (normative reference).
  • Other parts of the IEC 61169 series covering connector families and test methods.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and

Surface roughness: Ra ≤ 0,4 μm on the cylindrical surface of length e.

3.2.2.1 Test procedure
The gauge A shall be inserted into the outer contact three times. This is a sizing operation.
After this, the gauge B shall have a withdrawal force of 0,56 N minimum after being inserted
into outer contact. The contact shall retain the mass of the gauge in a vertical downward
position.

NOTE 1 Mechanical and electrical reference plane.
NOTE 2 Spring fingers, the structure is optional.
NOTE 3 Dimensions are chosen to meet mechanical performance requirements.
NOTE 4 The diameter is chosen upon the assumption that the PTFE dielectric has a
dielectric constant of 2,02 to give an impedance of 50 Ω ± 0,5 Ω.
