Overview
FprEN IEC 63522-3:2025 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) under the CLC organization. This document, titled "Electrical relays - Tests and measurements - Part 3: Relay coil properties," sets forth detailed procedures and requirements for evaluating the electrical properties of relay coils. The standard ensures relay coil parameters such as resistance, impedance, inductance, power consumption, and transient suppression are within acceptable limits, guaranteeing reliable relay performance in practical applications.
The standard addresses testing during transportation, storage, and operational use, aiming to maintain quality consistency and operational reliability of the relay coils. It replaces prior related drafts and is part of the broader IEC 63522 series focused on electrical relays.
Key Topics
Coil Resistance Testing
Ensures the direct current (DC) resistance of the relay coil is within specific limits to maintain coil functionality and durability. The standard recommends four-wire resistance measurements for accuracy, minimizing errors caused by leads or contacts. Special considerations include defining test temperature, wire material coefficients, and accommodating components like diodes integrated into the coil circuit.Coil Impedance Measurement
Provides methods to measure coil impedance either through applied voltage and current (calculating Z=U/I) or direct LCR meter measurement at 1 kHz frequency. Conditions such as AC or DC voltage levels, frequencies, and coil voltage ratings must be specified for precise testing.Coil Inductance and Power Consumption
Defines procedures to test inductance and power consumed by the coil during operation. These properties are critical for assessing relay energy efficiency and electromagnetic behavior.Coil Transient Suppression Tests
Evaluates the coil's ability to suppress transient voltages, which can affect relay lifespan and interference with other electronics. This includes measurement of voltage spikes during coil de-energization to ensure compliance with safety and electromagnetic compatibility standards.Testing Procedures and Equipment Requirements
The standard specifies the need to remove coil suppression devices unless indicated, use short test durations to prevent coil heating effects, and details measurement techniques for accuracy. Relevant figures illustrate proper wiring setups and typical measurement circuits.Documentation and Reporting
Emphasizes thorough test reporting including environmental conditions, measurement methods, and any deviations to ensure traceability and quality control.
Applications
This standard is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and quality assurance professionals working with electrical relays in diverse industries such as:
Industrial Automation
Guaranteeing that relay coils perform reliably under varying electrical loads and environments.Automotive Electronics
Ensuring coil properties meet automotive standards for durability and transient resilience.Power Systems Protection
Testing relay coils in protective relays to maintain system safety and rapid fault response.Consumer Electronics
Contributing to the durability and efficiency of relays used in household appliances and smart devices.Transportation and Storage Compliance
Verifying relay coil integrity throughout shipment and storage conditions to minimize faults at installation.
By adhering to the standard, stakeholders ensure relay coil properties meet international requirements, enhancing product reliability and compatibility.
