Overview
EN IEC 63522-21:2025 sets out standardized procedures for assessing the thermal endurance of electrical relays under high-temperature, long-duration conditions. Developed by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CLC) and harmonized with IEC standards, this document is crucial for manufacturers and testing laboratories responsible for relay quality assurance. It provides the framework for ensuring that relays can withstand thermal stress during transportation, storage, and operational life, supporting safety, reliability, and compliance in various electrical and electronic applications.
This standard is part of the wider IEC 63522 series focused on electrical relays' tests and measurements. Part 21 specifically addresses methods to evaluate resistance against high temperatures over extended periods, thus ensuring product reliability in real-world environments.
Key Topics
- Thermal Endurance Testing: Defines standardized test methods to determine the ability of relays to perform reliably when subjected to prolonged high-temperature conditions.
- Test Procedures: Procedures include energizing the relay at maximum rated coil voltage and limiting continuous current for specified durations-typically 1,000, 2,000, and up to 5,000 hours.
- Test Conditions: Specifies mounting methods (such as on standard PCBs, PWBs, connectors, or sockets), maximum ambient temperature, energization values, load currents, and minimum recommended sample size.
- Measurements and Evaluation:
- Initial verification of switching function at specified operating and release voltage
- Monitoring relay performance at defined intervals (72h, 200h, 500h, 1000h, 2000h, 5000h)
- Intermediate and final measurements based on functional and contact resistance tests per related standards
- Comprehensive test report requirements for reproducibility and traceability
- Documentation: Emphasizes clear, detailed test records, including deviations, methods used, environmental conditions, and results.
Applications
EN IEC 63522-21:2025 applies to a broad range of sectors where reliable relay performance is critical:
- Manufacturing: Relay manufacturers incorporate these tests as part of their product validation and quality assurance processes to ensure devices meet durability and reliability standards.
- Quality Assurance Laboratories: Independent and in-house labs rely on this standard to benchmark relay performance for different climates and operational stresses.
- Installation and Maintenance: End users (OEMs, panel builders, maintenance teams) use products certified under this standard to reduce failure rates in systems exposed to thermal cycling, electrical loads, or harsh storage/transport conditions.
- Regulatory Compliance: Demonstrating conformity to EN IEC 63522-21:2025 is often necessary for CE marking, tender acceptance, or meeting contractual requirements in industrial, automation, energy, and infrastructure sectors.
Related Standards
For comprehensive relay testing, EN IEC 63522-21:2025 is used alongside several other key documents:
- EN IEC 63522-0: Tests and Measurements - Part 0: General and Guidance

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest
