Overview
The EN IEC 63522-43:2026 standard, titled Electrical relays – Tests and measurements – Part 43: Proof tracking index (PTI), published by the CLC, specifies a standardized test method to evaluate the tracking resistance of insulating materials used in electrical relays. This standard focuses on the ability of materials to resist electrical tracking during transportation, storage, and operational conditions. It ensures that insulating materials maintain performance and safety under electrical stress combined with environmental contamination.
The PTI test evaluates the durability of plastic insulating materials against the progressive formation of conductive paths (tracking) which can lead to insulation failure. By defining test conditions, procedures, and evaluation criteria, EN IEC 63522-43:2026 promotes reliability and quality assurance in relay manufacturing.
Key Topics
Scope and Purpose: Defines testing methods to measure the proof tracking index, indicating the material’s ability to withstand electrical tracking without failure.
Proof Tracking Index (PTI): Represents the voltage level (in volts) at which specimens withstand electrical stress for 50 drops of contaminating solution without tracking or persistent flame.
Testing Procedure:
- Uses AC voltage between 100 V and 600 V applied to flat specimens (minimum 15 mm × 15 mm, thickness ≥ 3 mm).
- Test follows the methodology in IEC 60112 using test solution A (water with contaminants).
- Five specimens are tested; failure criteria include tracking failure or persistent flame.
- If one specimen fails out of five, a second set of five can be tested. Up to one failure in ten specimens is acceptable.
Material Groups by PTI Values:
- Group I: PTI ≥ 600 V
- Group II: 400 V ≤ PTI < 600 V
- Group IIIa: 175 V ≤ PTI < 400 V
- Group IIIb: 100 V ≤ PTI < 175 V
Evaluation Criteria: Tests are positive if no failures occur during 50 drops. Failure leads to repeat testing or specimen modification.
Test Reporting Requirements: Includes detailed material description, specimen size and thickness, test voltage, number of drops, and observations such as tracking failure or flame occurrence.
Applications
Electrical Relays Quality Control: Ensures insulating materials used in all-or-nothing electrical relays meet safety and performance demands under electrical stress combined with environmental contaminants.
Material Qualification: Assists manufacturers in selecting plastics with appropriate tracking resistance, vital for maintaining insulation integrity in relay components.
Safety Assurance: Helps prevent tracking failures that can cause insulation breakdown, short circuits, and fire hazards in electrical installations.
Research and Development: Provides standardized test methods for new insulating materials or relay designs to verify compliance before market introduction.
Regulatory Compliance: Supports adherence to international safety standards related to electrical insulation and relay operation.
