Optični spojni elementi in pasivne komponente - Osnovni preskusni in merilni postopki - 2-21. del: Preskusi - Sestavljeno ciklično preskušanje temperatura-vlaga (IEC 61300-2-21:2009)

Overview

EN 61300-2-21:2010 (IEC 61300-2-21:2009) specifies the composite temperature/humidity cyclic test for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. The standard defines a reproducible laboratory procedure to determine a device’s resistance to combined high temperature, high humidity and cold conditions. It is intended to reveal moisture-related defects caused by “breathing” (pumping of moisture into cracks and interfaces) rather than simple bulk absorption, including damage from freezing of trapped water and condensation.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test purpose: Detect deterioration from cyclic humidity and temperature, freezing of trapped water, and condensation effects on fibre optic devices.
  • Test cycle: Ten 24-hour temperature/humidity cycles. During any five of the first nine cycles the device under test (DUT) is exposed to cold sub-cycles.
  • Temperature range and timing: Typical subcycles move between 25 °C ±2 °C and 65 °C ±2 °C. Rise/fall ramps are 1 h 30 min to 2 h 30 min. Cold excursions go to –10 °C ±2 °C with a 3 h hold (when applicable).
  • Humidity control: Relative humidity at 93 % RH ±3 % RH during constant/rising temperature periods and 88 % RH ±8 % RH during falling temperature periods. Air circulation and uniform conditions in the humidity chamber are required.
  • Pre‑conditioning: DUTs are normally preconditioned at 55 °C ±2 °C with ≤20 % RH for 24 h, then stabilized to standard test conditions before initial measurements.
  • Apparatus requirements: Humidity and cold chambers must maintain specified temperatures, humidity and uniformity; condensate must be drained and not reused; DUTs must not be exposed to radiant heat.
  • Measurements: Visual inspection and optical attenuation measurements are performed per IEC 61300-3-1 and IEC 61300-3-4; optical source/detector requirements follow IEC 61300-3-4.
  • Reference: Procedure is conducted in accordance with IEC 60068-2-38 (Test Z/AD).

Applications and who uses it

  • Manufacturers of fibre optic connectors, adapters, splitters, pigtails and passive components use EN 61300-2-21:2010 for design validation and reliability assessment.
  • Qualification and test laboratories apply the composite temperature/humidity cyclic test during product qualification and failure analysis.
  • Quality engineers, R&D teams and procurement use the standard to specify environmental robustness requirements for components intended for telecom, datacom, military, transportation and industrial applications.
  • System integrators rely on test evidence based on this standard when selecting passive optical components for harsh or outdoor environments.

Part 2-21: Tests –
Composite temperature/humidity cyclic test
1 Scope The purpose of this part of IEC 61300 is to determine the resistance of a fibre optic device to the deteriorative effects of high temperature, humidity and cold conditions. It is intended to reveal defects in a device under test (DUT) caused by breathing as opposed to absorption of moisture. The test covers the effect of the freezing of trapped water in cracks and fissures as well as condensation. However, the degree of condensation will vary depending on the size and thermal mass of the DUT. This test differs from other cyclic damp heat tests in that it derives its increased severity from: a) a greater number of temperature variations leading to pumping actions in a given time; b) a greater cyclic temperature range; c) a higher rate of change of temperature; d) the inclusion of a number of excursions to sub-zero temperature. This type of test is particularly important for fibre optic devices made of a variety of different materials. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document.
