Overview
EN 61061-2:2001/A1:2001 is a European standard specifying methods of test for non-impregnated, densified laminated wood used in electrical applications. Developed and maintained by the CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization), this standard aligns with the international IEC 61061-2:1992/A1:2001 and ensures consistent testing procedures for evaluating the mechanical and electrical performance of densified laminated wood materials.
This standard amendment focuses primarily on refining and standardizing the shearing strength test for glue line bonds, critical for assessing the structural integrity of laminated wood used as insulating materials in electrical equipment. The implementation of EN 61061-2 contributes to safety, durability, and reliability in electrical engineering applications where such materials are utilized.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability: Tailored for non-impregnated, densified laminated wood specifically intended for electrical purposes. It is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and compliance bodies dealing with insulating materials.
Shearing Strength Test for Glue Line Bond:
- Specifies the procedure to determine shearing strength parallel to laminations with detailed specimen preparation guidelines.
- Requires machining the test piece to a thickness of 20 mm, then cutting cubic blocks (20 mm sides).
- Test conditions include controlled load application to achieve rupture within 60 ± 30 seconds.
- Results based on shearing force divided by the total shearing area, reported in megapascals (MPa) including minimum, maximum, and central values.
Test Apparatus and Setup:
- Includes detailed device dimensions and tolerances for consistent replication, ensuring accuracy and repeatability across test environments.
- Test specimens must be conditioned per predefined standards to emulate operational environments prior to testing.
Standardization and Compliance:
- Amendment aligns EN 61061-2 with IEC standards, promoting international harmonization.
- CENELEC members are obligated to implement the amendment as national standards without alteration, exemplifying unified regulatory requirements across Europe.
Applications
EN 61061-2:2001/A1:2001 is crucial for the electrical industry, particularly in sectors using laminated wood as insulating components within electrical devices. Typical applications include:
- Insulating parts in transformers, switchgear, and electrical machines where mechanical strength and electrical insulation are critical.
- Quality control processes for producers of densified laminated wood products to certify adherence to performance and safety benchmarks.
- Research and development for developing improved laminates with reliable glue line bonding to withstand mechanical stresses in electrical environments.
- National and international regulatory compliance for electrical equipment manufacturers aiming for market approval and standard conformity.
The standardized test methods guarantee that materials meet the stringent demands of electrical insulation applications, helping to prevent failure due to delamination or mechanical breakdown under operational stresses.
