Overview
EN 60512-2-6:2002 (IEC 60512-2-6) defines a standardized test method for measuring electrical continuity of connector housings (shells) that are intended to provide a conductive path when mated. This test (Test 2f) is part of the IEC 60512 family for connectors and is used when specified in a detail specification. It is focused on measuring contact resistance through housing joints and is not intended to assess shielding effectiveness against magnetic or RF interference.
Key Topics
- Scope and purpose: Measure resistance between component housings (shells) intended to provide electrical continuity when mated.
- Test conditions: Measurements are performed on mated sets of components. Free (unfixed) components shall be fitted with short lengths of wire or cable as defined in the detail specification.
- Measurement paths: Resistance is measured through all joints connected in series, for example:
- From cable braid and/or housing to mounting panel when one connector is fixed.
- Between cable braids for free components.
- Between mounting panels when both connectors are fixed.
- Measurement methods: Use the contact resistance measurement procedures specified in IEC 60512-2-2 (Test 2b) or IEC 60512-2-3 (Test 2c) as required by the detail specification.
- Acceptance criterion: The measured resistance shall not exceed the maximum value specified in the detail specification.
Applications
This standard is used by connector manufacturers, test laboratories and quality engineers to:
- Verify conductive continuity of connector housings and shell-to-shell connections during design validation.
- Confirm grounding and bonding continuity in mated assemblies before integration into larger systems.
- Support production quality control and incoming inspection for connector batches where housing continuity is required.
- Provide objective, repeatable measurement data for supplier and customer agreements where detail specifications reference EN 60512-2-6.
Practical benefits: standardized methodology, reproducible results, and clear definition of measurement points and required references to Test 2b/2c methods.
Related Standards
- IEC 60512-2-2 (Test 2b) - Contact resistance, specified test current method
- IEC 60512-2-3 (Test 2c) - Contact resistance variation
- IEC 60512 (other parts) - General tests and measurements for connectors
When invoking EN 60512-2-6 in a detail specification, include the required mounting method, measurement points, chosen test method (2b or 2c), maximum permissible resistance, and any permitted deviations from the standard procedure to ensure clear, enforceable testing and acceptance criteria.
