Overview
EN 61754-19:2002 (IEC 61754-19) specifies the standardized interface dimensions for the Type SG connector family used in fibre optic systems. The standard defines mechanical and optical interface geometry for a single-position duplex plug and matching duplex socket (contact angle 8°), including drawings, dimensional tables and fibre endface tolerances to ensure reliable intermateability.
Key topics and requirements
- Interface definitions: Detailed figures and tables (plug: 61754-19-1; socket: 61754-19-2) that set precise mechanical reference planes and dimensional limits for all relevant features.
- Plug and socket geometry: Description of the duplex cantilevered fibres in the plug, and integral V-grooves in the socket that capture, guide and align plug fibres during mating.
- Latching and keying: Requirements for a spring-release latch that limits plug penetration, prevents inverted assembly and controls travel to avoid overtravel.
- Contamination control: Integral plug cover and socket door details; normally closed to reduce contamination and self-actuating on mating.
- Optical tolerances: Fibre endface geometry and perpendicularity limits, fibre core diameter considerations, and dimensional tolerances for V-grooves and fibre positioning.
- Intermateability: Specifies which interfaces mate (61754-19-1 with 61754-19-2) and notes on allowable internal features (e.g., guides, bend-radius limits) that must not compromise intermateability.
- Patents/licensing: The standard notes possible patent claims related to SG connectors (patent holder identified in the document), and that licensing may be required under reasonable terms.
Applications and who uses it
- Connector and component manufacturers: Use the standard to design and produce compliant Type SG plugs, sockets, adapters and test fixtures.
- Telecommunications and datacom equipment designers: Ensure panel cutouts, chassis, and backplane interfaces meet mechanical mating requirements.
- Cable installers and system integrators: Verify physical compatibility and plan ingress/egress clearances, latching and dust protection behavior.
- Test laboratories and QA teams: Accept/reject parts against dimensional and optical-interface tolerances to guarantee reliable intermateability.
- Procurement/spec writers: Reference EN 61754-19:2002 in specifications to ensure vendor components will mate properly.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two
organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical specifications, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National
Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) draws attention to the fact that it is claimed that compliance
with this International Standard may involve the use of a patent concerning SG connectors.
The IEC takes no position concerning the evidence, validity and scope of this patent right.
