Overview
EN 60062:2016/A1:2019 (CLC, parallel to IEC 60062:2016/A1:2019) defines standardized marking codes for resistors and capacitors used in electronic equipment. Amendment A1 (2019) introduces a new informative Annex B that formalizes a special two-character code system for capacitors and clarifies the availability of other reduced-length coding schemes used in industry (for example a special three-character code for resistors in Annex A).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Standardizes compact marking schemes for resistor and capacitor values to ensure unambiguous identification on components with limited marking area.
- Annex B - Two-character capacitor code:
- Purpose: mark E6/E12/E24 series capacitance values when surface area prevents regular three-or-more character markings.
- Structure: one uppercase letter (code for the two significant digits) followed immediately by one digit (code for the multiplier). No space between characters.
- Table B.1 maps significant numbers (E24-format with a decimal after the first digit) to uppercase letters (case sensitive).
- Table B.2 maps code digits to multipliers (from 0.1 pF up to 100 µF).
- Example: L4 represents 27 nF (L = 2.7 → significant; 4 = multiplier 10 nF).
- Notes: coding is case-sensitive; the IEC tables differ in presentation from IEC 60063 E-series listings and from some historical EIA/CENELEC variants.
- General rules: Amendment adds a note that special reduced-length codes exist (special three-character resistors - Annex A; special two-character capacitors - Annex B). The base standard contains the general three-character coding method (see clause 4.3.2).
- Administrative: the amendment was approved by CENELEC and endorsed without modification; implement/withdrawal dates and a patent-rights caution are included.
Applications and users
- Who uses it:
- Component manufacturers (SMD multilayer ceramic capacitors, small film capacitors) for marking products.
- PCB designers, assembly houses and procurement teams to read and verify component values.
- Test/repair technicians and quality/inspection engineers for identification where board space is constrained.
- Standards bodies and spec writers referencing consistent marking conventions.
- Practical benefits:
- Enables compact, unambiguous component marking on tiny SMD parts.
- Improves interoperability between manufacturers and buyers by using standardized codes (E24/E12/E6 series).
Related standards
- IEC 60062 (base edition)
- IEC 60063 (E-series values reference)
- Bibliography entries referenced: ANSI/EIA 198-1 and CECC 32 101 (examples of prior industry coding usage).
Keywords: EN 60062, IEC 60062, marking codes for resistors and capacitors, two-character capacitor code, SMD capacitor marking, E24 series, component marking standard.
