Optical fibres - Part 1-53: Measurement methods and test procedures - Water immersion tests
IEC 60793-1-53:2014 provides a practical method for evaluating fibre performance in a defined environment. The purpose of this standard is to define a test that determines the suitability of sub-category A1a to A1d multimode fibres and class B and C single-mode fibres to withstand the environmental condition of immersion in distilled or demineralized water which may occur in actual use, storage and/or transport. The test is primarily intended to permit the observation of effects of immersion in water over a given period. This procedure is conducted in accordance with IEC 60068-2-18, Test R. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition, published in 2001, and constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - harmonizing the content with sectional specifications of relevant fibre types; - extending the applicability of the standard to Class C single-mode fibres. Keywords: sub-category A1a to A1d multimode fibres, class B and C single-mode fibres, immersion in distilled or demineralized water

Optična vlakna - 1-53. del: Metode merjenja - Preskusi namakanja v vodi

Overview
EN 60793-1-53:2014 (IEC 60793-1-53:2014) defines a practical water immersion test method for evaluating optical fibre performance when exposed to immersion in distilled or demineralized water. The standard targets sub-category A1a to A1d multimode fibres and class B and C single‑mode fibres, describing specimen preparation, test conditions, measurement routines and reporting. This edition harmonizes content with sectional fibre specifications and extends applicability to class C single‑mode fibres.
Key topics
- Scope and purpose
- Determine suitability of fibres to withstand immersion in distilled/demineralized water that may occur during use, storage or transport.
- Test environment
- Specimens immersed in a water tank (distilled/demineralized/de‑ionized water) with pH between 5.0 and 8.0.
- Water temperature: 23 °C ± 5 °C; immersion duration: 30 days (performed in accordance with IEC 60068-2-18, Test R).
- Specimen requirements
- Minimum specimen lengths: ≥ 1 000 m for A1a–A1d multimode fibres; ≥ 2 000 m for class B and C single‑mode fibres.
- Fibre coiling: loose coil, ends kept out of water, minimum bend diameter 150 mm to avoid macrobend effects.
- Measurements and procedures
- Optical attenuation measured before, during (after thermal stabilization) and after the test using IEC 60793-1-40 methods (Annex B insertion loss or Annex C backscattering) at wavelengths specified in the relevant product specification.
- Coating strip force measured before and after immersion per IEC 60793-1-32 to assess changes in strippability.
- Recovery period under standard atmospheric conditions: >12 h and ≤48 h, unless the detail specification requires otherwise.
- Pass/fail
- Applicable limits and acceptance criteria are given in the relevant sectional specifications (IEC 60793-2-10 for A1, IEC 60793-2-50 for B, IEC 60793-2-60 for C).
Applications and users
This standard is used by:
- Optical fibre manufacturers for product qualification and quality control.
- Test laboratories performing environmental and reliability testing.
- Procurement and specification engineers who need verified resistance to water immersion during transport, storage or deployment.
- Developers of product specifications and sectional fibre standards.
Keywords: water immersion tests, optical fibres, sub-category A1a to A1d multimode fibres, class B and C single-mode fibres, immersion in distilled or demineralized water.
