Electric motor-operated hand-held tools, transportable tools and lawn and garden machinery - Safety - Part 2-5: Particular requirements for hand-held circular saws (IEC 62841-2-5:2014, modified)
IEC 62841-2-5:2014 applies to hand-held circular saws. This standard does not apply to saws designed for use with abrasive wheels. Saws designed for use with abrasive wheels as cut-off machines are covered by IEC 62841-2-22. The rated voltage is not more than 250 V for single-phase a.c. or d.c. tools, and 480 V for three-phase a.c. tools. The rated input is not more than 3 700 W. The limits for the applicability of this standard for battery tools is given in Annex K. This standard deals with the hazards presented by tools which are encountered by all persons in the normal use and reasonably foreseeable misuse of the tools. Hand-held electric tools, which can be mounted on a support or working stand for use as fixed tools without any alteration of the tool itself, are within the scope of this standard and such combination of a hand-held tool and a support is considered to be a transportable tool and thus covered by the relevant Part 3. The attention of National Committees is drawn to the fact that equipment manufacturers and testing organizations may need a transitional period following publication of a new, amended or revised IEC publication in which to make products in accordance with the new requirements and to equip themselves for conducting new or revised tests. It is the recommendation of the committee that the content of this publication be adopted for implementation nationally not earlier than 36 months from the date of publication. Key words: Saw, Circular, Cutting, This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 62841-1:2014.

Overview
EN 62841-2-5:2014/prAB:2024 is the CLC (European) amendment to the IEC safety standard for hand‑held circular saws. It specifies particular safety requirements for electrically motor‑operated hand‑held and transportable circular saws (not those designed for abrasive wheels, which are covered by IEC 62841‑2‑22). The standard is intended to be read in conjunction with IEC 62841‑1:2014 and sets limits on rated voltage and input power, with battery‑tool applicability addressed in Annex K.
Key scope facts:
- Applies to hand‑held circular saws; excludes abrasive‑wheel saws
- Rated voltage limits: ≤250 V (single‑phase a.c./d.c.), ≤480 V (three‑phase a.c.)
- Rated input limit: ≤3 700 W
- Battery tool limits are defined in Annex K
- Covers hazards from normal use and reasonably foreseeable misuse
Key topics and requirements
This amendment (prAB:2024) introduces targeted modifications and additions that manufacturers, test houses and conformity assessors should note:
- Guarding and protective devices: guarding system requirements reorganized (moved between clauses) and updated tables and clause references (e.g., Clause 17 → Clause 19).
- Marking and instructions: targeted changes to Clause 8 (deletion of NOTE 101 in 8.2) and requirements for user information and warnings.
- Battery tool safety (Annexes K and L): new mandatory requirements for tools with integral batteries to incorporate either:
- an isolation device that disconnects at least one battery pole and provides clear indication and protection against accidental reconnection; or
- a disabling device preventing unintentional starting (e.g., two‑action lock‑off or removable disabling device). Compliance is verified by inspection and manual test.
- Risk areas addressed: control systems, break‑up risk, ejected objects, moving parts, maintenance, variations in operating conditions, and isolation of energy sources.
- Regulatory alignment: includes Annex ZA/ZZ to map normative references and show conformity to EU Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC) essential requirements.
Applications and users
Who benefits from EN 62841-2-5:
- Manufacturers and designers of hand‑held circular saws for product design, guarding and control strategies
