Overview

prEN IEC 61300-2-2:2025 - "Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components - Basic test and measurement procedures - Part 2-2: Tests - Mating durability" specifies a standardized test method to evaluate the mechanical and optical effects of repeated mating and un-mating of fibre optic connectors and passive interconnecting devices. The procedure quantifies changes in attenuation and return loss during cycling, records mechanical degradation, and defines pass/fail criteria for typical usage conditions (plug‑adapter‑plug and plug‑socket configurations).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Purpose: Assess effects of successive mating/un‑mating cycles on optical performance and mechanical condition.
  • Test configurations: Plug‑adapter‑plug and plug‑socket; when using an adapter only one plug is cycled.
  • Cycling procedure: Each un‑mate/mate pair = one cycle; minimum time between cycles is 3 seconds. Mating is performed per the manufacturer’s instructions; force is applied manually unless an alternate method is specified.
  • Monitoring: Continuous or periodic monitoring of attenuation and return loss using the measurement setup from IEC 61300-3-3. Measurements are recorded after every mating.
  • Cleaning and remeasurement: Devices may be inspected and cleaned (manufacturer’s instructions or IEC TR 62627-01). Up to three additional cleaning/measurement attempts are allowed; failure is declared if performance requirements are not met after four consecutive attempts.
  • Severity / number of cycles: Recommended severity levels depend on ferrule type and performance category. Examples in the draft: 200 cycles for cylindrical ferrules, 50 cycles for rectangular ferrules, and 20 cycles for hardened connectors. Test severity should be verified against the applicable IEC 61753 performance standard or IEC 62005 reliability document.
  • Final inspection: Visual examination per IEC 61300-3-1 to check wear, broken parts, seal damage, or interface scratching; final optical measurements per applicable performance/reliability standards.
  • Reporting: DUT characteristics, selected severity, initial/final measurements, count of cleanings, deviations from procedure, and pass/fail outcomes must be reported.

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Connector and passive component manufacturers validating durability and design.
  • Test laboratories performing qualification and reliability testing.
  • Network equipment and system integrators specifying connector robustness for installations.

FOREWORD
35 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
36 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
37 co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
38 in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
39 Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
40 preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
41 may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
42 with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
43 Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
44 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
45 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
46 interested IEC National Committees.
47 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
48 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
49 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
50 misinterpretation by any end user.
51 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
52 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
53 any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
54 5) IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any equipment
55 declared to be in conformity with an IEC Publication.
56 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
57 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
58 members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
59 other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
60 expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC Publications.
61 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
62 indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
63 9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
64 rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
