Overview

EN 61300-2-2:2009, titled Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components - Basic test and measurement procedures - Part 2-2: Tests - Mating durability, is a European standard developed by CLC, based on IEC 61300-2-2:2009. This standard specifies the essential test method used to evaluate the mechanical and optical performance of fibre optic connectors and passive interconnecting devices after multiple cycles of connection and disconnection. The primary goal is to assess the durability of mating interfaces under normal operating conditions and gauge mechanical degradation and optical performance changes such as attenuation and return loss.

EN 61300-2-2:2009 introduces updated procedures including testing of plug-socket configurations, new measurement conditions, and defined severity levels, superseding the previous 2003 edition. It ensures that fibre optic devices maintain reliable performance throughout their operational lifespan, which is critical for telecommunications, data communication, and industrial optical networks.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Purpose
The standard focuses on the effect of repeated mating cycles on fibre optic connectors and interconnecting devices. It measures the changes in optical performance (attenuation and return loss) and mechanical wear.

  • Test Procedures
    The testing process includes:

    • Initial Inspection: Visual and optical characterization prior to cycling.
    • Cycling: Repeated engagement and separation cycles of the connectors with a minimum interval of 3 seconds, performed under normal use conditions.
    • Measurement: Monitoring attenuation and return loss after cycles using equipment compliant with IEC 61300-3 series standards.
  • Measurement Conditions
There are two main measurement regimes:

    • Condition A: Optical measurements are recorded after every mating cycle with a limited number of cleanings to restore performance if needed.
    • Condition B: Population of samples divided into groups mounted at varying heights, with optical testing after every 25 matings and cleaning intervals set at every 25 or 50 matings.
  • Apparatus Requirements
Proper fixtures to hold devices under realistic conditions, force applicators for engagement and separation (often manual unless otherwise specified), and optical measurement devices to monitor performance throughout testing.

  • Severity Levels
The standard defines severity levels for testing to simulate different operational wear rates and provide standardized benchmarks for device durability assessment.

Applications

  • Telecommunication Networks
Ensures fiber optic connectors used in high-speed data transmission maintain integrity after repeated maintenance or reinstallation.

  • Data Centers and IT Infrastructure
Provides methodical verification of connector reliability critical to minimizing downtime and signal loss.

  • Industrial Optical Systems
Facilitates endurance testing for optical components used in harsh environments, guaranteeing stable and predictable connector lifespan.

  • Product Development and Quality Assurance
Manufacturers use this standard during design validation and production testing to improve connector design and ensure compliance with international durability expectations.
