Overview
EN 12390-6:2023 - Testing hardened concrete: Part 6 - defines the standard method for determining the tensile splitting strength (Brazil test) of hardened concrete test specimens. The reference specimen is a moulded cylindrical specimen (commonly 150 mm diameter × 300 mm length), but the method can also be applied to cored specimens (minimum 75 mm diameter, per EN 12504-1) and - as described in Annex A - to cubes or prisms. This European Committee for Standardization (CEN) standard was approved in November 2023 and supersedes EN 12390-6:2009.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & principle
- Measures tensile strength by applying a compressive load across a narrow line on the cylinder, inducing orthogonal tensile failure.
- Reference specimen
- Moulded cylinders are the reference; cored specimens ≥ 75 mm diameter are permitted.
- Cubic/prismatic testing procedure provided in Annex A (non-reference).
- Apparatus
- Testing machine must conform to EN 12390-4.
- Optional jig for positioning; curved or plane loading pieces may be used for non-cylindrical specimens.
- Packing strips
- Hardboard packing strips are standardized (EN 316) and specified for dimensions and hardness; they are single-use.
- Standardized strip width and thickness and a hardness/punch test criterion are given to reduce variability.
- Test procedure
- Specimen preparation and alignment, cleaning, and marking are specified.
- Controlled loading rate: 0.04–0.06 MPa/s (constant stress rate).
- Examination of fracture surfaces and recording of abnormalities.
- Results & reporting
- Calculation and expression of tensile splitting strength, precision data and required test-report content are included.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses it
- Concrete testing laboratories, materials engineers, quality control teams, construction contractors, and research establishments.
- Authorities and certification bodies requiring harmonized tensile-strength data for specifications or disputes.
- Why it matters
- Provides a reproducible method to assess tensile behavior of hardened concrete for design verification, quality control, specification compliance, and forensic analysis of in-situ cores.
- Useful for mix design comparisons, durability assessments, and checking compaction/density prior to tensile testing.

The EN 12390-6:2023 standard is pivotal in the field of concrete testing, specifically focusing on the tensile splitting strength of hardened concrete test specimens. This document provides a comprehensive methodology for determining this critical property, ensuring that practitioners have a reliable and standardized approach to evaluating the performance of concrete materials. One of the primary strengths of EN 12390-6 is its clarity in specifying the test specimen requirements, which include moulded cylindrical specimens and cores with a minimum diameter of 75 mm, adhering to EN 12504-1. This focus on precise specifications fosters consistency across testing laboratories, promoting accurate and repeatable results. Additionally, the inclusion of alternative specimen shapes, such as cubic or prismatic specimens in Annex A, enhances the standard's versatility. This flexibility allows for a broader application in various testing scenarios, accommodating different practices in concrete construction and ensuring that the standard remains relevant in diverse contexts. Furthermore, the standard's emphasis on the tensile splitting strength is particularly significant, as this property plays a vital role in assessing the structural integrity and durability of concrete. By following the guidelines outlined in EN 12390-6:2023, engineers and technicians can reliably evaluate the performance of concrete mixtures, contributing to the overall safety and longevity of concrete structures. In conclusion, the EN 12390-6:2023 standard stands out for its well-defined scope, adaptability, and focus on crucial testing parameters for hardened concrete. Its relevance in the construction industry cannot be overstated, as it lays the foundation for high-quality concrete testing and assurance.
