Vitreous and porcelain enamels for aluminium - Determination of the adhesion of enamels on aluminium under the action of electrolytic solution (spall test) (ISO 13805:1999)
This International Standard specifies a test method for the accelerated determination of the resistance of porcelain
enamel coatings on aluminium and aluminium alloys to spalling as a result of exposure to moisture or weathering.
Because spalling is caused by the lack of adhesion between the coating and the base metal, the spall test is a test
of adhesion. The greater the extent of spalling in this test, the greater the likelihood that the article will spall in
service.

Overview
EN ISO 13805:2009 is an international standard developed by CEN that specifies a test method for determining the adhesion quality of vitreous and porcelain enamel coatings applied on aluminium and aluminium alloys. The standard focuses on an accelerated spall test using an electrolytic solution to simulate moisture or weathering exposure. Spalling, a type of coating failure caused by inadequate adhesion between the enamel and the aluminium base, can compromise the durability of enamelled aluminium products. This standard provides a reliable method to evaluate the likelihood of spalling in service by measuring enamel adhesion strength under controlled laboratory conditions.
Key Topics
Spall Test Principle: Involves immersing a scored enamelled aluminium specimen in an aqueous solution of antimony trichloride (SbCl₃) at a concentration of 10 g/L for 20 hours at ambient temperatures of 18°C to 28°C. The test accelerates the spalling process caused by poor adhesion.
Specimen Preparation: The enamelled aluminium specimen is scored with a steel needle to expose the base metal, cleaned, and prepared with a clean cut edge at approximately 90°. The specimen’s cleanliness is ensured by immersion in a cleaning solution to remove grease or impurities.
Test Solution: The antimony trichloride solution includes hydrochloric acid and a precipitate of antimonious oxychloride (SbOCl) and antimony trioxide (Sb₂O₃), essential components of the test environment, simulating corrosive conditions.
Evaluation Criteria: Visual inspection from 250 mm distance to identify spalling areas, with specific thresholds for acceptable damage size and location relative to edges or score marks. The extent of enamel detachment indicates adhesion quality.
Test Reporting: Requires documentation of specimen type, reference to EN ISO 13805 test method, and detailed description of observed damage to facilitate quality control and certification.
Applications
EN ISO 13805:2009 is crucial in industries where porcelain or vitreous enamel coatings are applied to aluminium substrates, including:
Automotive manufacturing: Ensuring enamel coatings on aluminium parts withstand environmental moisture and mechanical stress.
Appliance production: Testing enamelled aluminium components for wear resistance and durability, particularly in kitchen appliances and cookware.
Architectural cladding: Verifying the adhesion integrity of enamelled aluminium panels exposed to weathering.
Electrical and electronic equipment: Guaranteeing protective enamel coatings maintain adhesion throughout service life.
Quality assurance and R&D: Supporting enamel formulation development and process optimization by providing accelerated performance data related to adhesion and coating durability.
Related Standards
ISO 13804: Specifies the production of specimens for testing vitreous and porcelain enamels on aluminium, complementing the sample preparation requirements of this spall adhesion test.
ISO 10141: Provides the vocabulary for vitreous and porcelain enamels, ensuring consistent terminology is used across enamel testing and production.
ISO 3819 & ISO 4788: Define laboratory glassware such as beakers and graduated cylinders necessary for the test procedure.
EN ISO 12944: Addresses corrosion protection of steel structures by protective paint systems and may relate to enamel coating standards in broader corrosion resistance contexts.
EN ISO 13805:2009 offers a standardized, accelerated testing method critical for evaluating and ensuring the long-term adhesion and durability of vitreous and porcelain enamel coatings on aluminium substrates. Its practical test approach is widely applicable to manufacturing, quality control, and product certification in multiple industries dealing with enamelled aluminium components exposed to environmental stress.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
International Standard ISO 13805 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 107, Metallic and other inorganic
coatings.
