Overview
EN ISO 3369:2010 is a European Standard adopted from the international ISO 3369:2006, specifying a precise method for determining the density of impermeable sintered metal materials and hardmetals. Developed by ISO Technical Committee TC 119 on Powder Metallurgy, this standard ensures consistent and accurate density measurements which are critical for quality control and material characterization in metallurgy and manufacturing industries. The method outlined in EN ISO 3369:2010 applies to dense, non-porous sintered metals and hardmetals, helping manufacturers verify material properties and conformity to specifications.
Key Topics
Scope
EN ISO 3369:2010 covers test methods aimed at determining the density of impermeable sintered metal and hardmetal samples, excluding permeable materials which are addressed in ISO 2738:1999.Principle
The density is calculated by weighing a test sample first in air, then when submerged in a liquid (typically water), using Archimedes' principle to determine volume from the displaced liquid.Test Apparatus
- Precision balance with high sensitivity (±0.1 mg for samples under 10g and 0.001% for heavier samples)
- Racks or suspension wire for holding samples during weighing
- Measuring vessel sized to minimize liquid level changes upon immersion
- Distilled or deionized water with wetting agents to improve measurement accuracy
Sample Requirements
Samples must be impermeable, with a minimum volume of 0.5 cm³ (or combined specimens exceeding this volume). Surfaces should be clean and free of contamination to avoid measurement errors.Density Calculation
Density ρ is computed as:ρ = (mass in air × density of liquid) / (mass in air – apparent mass in liquid)
Where the density of distilled water is temperature-dependent and provided in tabulated form for precise calculation.Precision and Accuracy
- Repeatability interval for specimens over 5g is 0.025 g/cm³
- Reproducibility interval for specimens over 5g is 0.03 g/cm³
These metrics ensure traceability and confidence in inter-laboratory measurements.
Reporting Requirements
Test reports must reference EN ISO 3369:2010 and include sample identification, test results, conditions, deviations from the standard method, and any factors affecting results.
Applications
Material Quality Control
Accurate density measurements help ensure sintered metal components meet required specifications, critical in aerospace, automotive, tooling, and electronics industries.Product Development and Research
Enables material engineers and researchers to characterize new sintered metal alloys and hardmetals, optimizing properties such as strength, wear resistance, and thermal conductivity.Process Validation
Consistent density testing confirms proper sintering and manufacturing processes, detecting voids or defects that might compromise product integrity.Compliance and Certification
Companies use EN ISO 3369:2010 as part of certification processes to meet international customer and regulatory standards for sintered metal materials.
Related Standards
ISO 2738:1999 – Determination of density, oil content, and open porosity in permeable sintered metal materials (excluding hardmetals). Complements EN ISO 3369:2010 for porous materials.
ISO 4489 – Sampling and testing methods for sintered hardmetals, providing guidance on specimen preparation compatible with density testing.
ASTM B311-93 – American Standard test method for density determination of powder metallurgy materials, referenced for precision data in EN ISO 3369:2010.
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 – Guidelines followed for preparing this and other international standards ensuring consistency and consensus.
EN ISO 3369:2010's methodical approach to density determination is fundamental for industries relying on the precise engineering of sintered metal components and hardmetals. By adhering to this standard, laboratories achieve reliable and repeatable density measurements essential for quality assurance, material research, and compliance with global metallurgical standards.
