Overview

EN 15146:2006 is a CEN European Standard that specifies the characteristics of solid softwood panelling and cladding – machined profiles without tongue and groove. It applies to elements machined from common European softwoods (spruce/fir, pine, larch, European Douglas fir and maritime pine) intended for interior or exterior use. The standard defines grading, moisture content, geometric and machining requirements but does not cover coatings or surface finishings. Note: products placed on the EEA market will also have to comply with EN 14915.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and species: Defines applicable softwood species and use cases (panelling for interior, cladding for exterior).
  • Appearance grading: Grading classes (A, B and specific rules for maritime pine) focus on face appearance - permitted knots, resin pockets, fissures, pith and other visual features. A manufacturer may declare a free grade if needed, but features must be declared in data sheets.
  • Moisture content: Production moisture content shall be either around (17 ± 2) % (commonly for external use) or (12 ± 2) % (commonly for internal use). Measurement methods follow EN 13183‑2 (electrical) or EN 13183‑1 (oven dry).
  • Geometrical characteristics & machining: Profiles vary across Europe; EN 15146 gives general dimensions and tolerances and refers to EN 13647 for measurement of geometrical characteristics. Machining requirements and acceptable edge treatments (chamfers, rounded arises) are covered.
  • Sampling and designation: Sampling procedures and product designation rules are included to support quality control and traceability.

Applications and users

EN 15146 is practical for:

  • Manufacturers and millworkers producing machined softwood boards for panelling and cladding
  • Architects and specifiers requiring compliant timber products and appearance grading information
  • Timber merchants and distributors for product labelling and inventory control
  • Façade contractors and interior fit-out installers selecting suitable profiles and moisture conditions
  • Quality controllers and testing labs performing grading, moisture and geometrical checks

Typical applications include interior wall panelling, exterior façade cladding, decorative lining, and specialty uses where machined profiles without tongue‑and‑groove are specified.

Related standards

Relevant references cited by EN 15146 include:

  • EN 14915 (market compliance note)
  • EN 13183-1 / EN 13183-2 (moisture content)
  • EN 13647 (geometrical measurement)
  • EN 350-2, EN 1309-1, and EN series on timber terminology and features

Using EN 15146:2006 helps ensure consistent quality, clear grading communication, and interoperability across European timber markets when specifying solid softwood panelling and cladding.

Natural variation within a single species is generally accepted as a common feature of wood and is not considered for classification of appearance, with the exception of free grade. Measuring features shall be in accordance with EN 1310. Concerning knots the general method in EN 1310:1997, 4.1.1, applies. The boards may be finished with surface coating. The grading shall be done before coating.
