Overview
EN ISO 11125-3:2018 is an international standard developed by CEN and ISO that specifies the test method for determining the Vickers hardness of metallic blast-cleaning abrasives. These abrasives are crucial for the preparation of steel substrates before the application of paints and related protective coatings. The standard ensures consistency and reliability in assessing the hardness of metallic blast-cleaning materials, which directly impacts their performance in surface preparation and coating adhesion.
The document is part of a coherent series of standards, including ISO 11124 and the ISO 11125 series, focused on the sampling, classification, and testing of metallic abrasives. It supersedes the 1997 version, incorporating updated procedures aligned with international best practices.
Key Topics
Scope of Testing
The standard applies specifically to metallic blast-cleaning abrasives with particle sizes larger than 0.3 mm. It excludes testing particles below this size due to the difficulty in obtaining accurate hardness measurements for very fine particles (grades S040/G050).Test Method
The method involves measuring the Vickers hardness using a hardness tester with optical magnification (minimum ×200), applying a test force up to 10 N. For particles larger than 0.5 mm, a 9.807 N force (HV 1) is used, while particles between 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm are tested at 4.904 N (HV 0.5).
Key procedural steps include:- Sampling in accordance with ISO 11125-1
- Embedding particles in metallurgical mounting material that hardens below 140 °C to avoid tempering effects
- Abrading and polishing the sample to expose half of the nominal particle diameter
- Performing hardness indentations away from sample edges and defects
- Taking multiple indentations (minimum ten) per sample and recording acceptable measurements
Accuracy and Calibration
Calibration of the hardness tester is verified with comparison plates similar in hardness to the abrasives tested to ensure measurement reliability.Result Expression
The results are expressed in terms of percentage conformance with requirements detailed in ISO 11124. While calculating an arithmetic mean hardness value is optional, it is commonly used for quality control and compliance verification.Limitations and Notes
The standard cautions against converting Vickers hardness values to other hardness scales or tensile strengths without validated conversion data due to potential inaccuracies.
Applications
Steel Surface Preparation
EN ISO 11125-3:2018 supports quality assurance in the blasting process that removes rust, mill scale, and old coatings from steel substrates to enhance paint adhesion.Abrasive Quality Control
Manufacturers and users of metallic blast-cleaning abrasives utilize this standard to test product hardness, ensuring abrasives meet specified durability and performance levels.Compliance and Certification
The standard aids compliance with coating system specifications that require verification of abrasive hardness to maintain consistent surface preparation standards.Research and Development
Testing according to this standard supports R&D activities focused on developing new types of blast-cleaning abrasives with optimized hardness characteristics for specific industrial applications.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
