Overview

The EN ISO 17871:2020/A1:2024 standard, published by CEN as an amendment to EN ISO 17871:2020, specifies requirements and type testing procedures for quick-release cylinder valves used in gas cylinders. This amendment, approved in April 2024, updates the original standard by integrating references to additional relevant ISO standards for cylinder valves and testing methods. It ensures enhanced safety, reliability, and interoperability of quick-release valves, which are critical components in the safe handling and use of pressurized gas cylinders.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Use
EN ISO 17871:2020/A1:2024 clarifies the application of the standard alongside related ISO standards, specifically ISO 10297, ISO 17879, and ISO 23826. These standards cover self-closing cylinder valves and ball valves, expanding the comprehensive regulatory framework around gas cylinder valve safety.

  • Normative References Updated
    New normative references added include:

    • ISO 17879:2017 for self-closing cylinder valves
    • ISO 23826:2021 for ball valves
  • Testing Procedures
The amendment introduces or amends key testing protocols, including:

    • Mechanical impact requirements adapted for ball valve quick-release designs
    • Hydraulic burst pressure tests to verify valve design pressure withstand capability
    • Leak tightness tests at specified temperatures and conditions with exemptions depending on valve type and application
    • Endurance testing requirements aligned with referenced standards ensuring durability under operational stress
  • Marking Requirements
If a valve is not tested for leak tightness at -40 °C, the lowest tested temperature must be clearly marked on the valve, providing critical safety information.

  • Harmonization and Consistency
This amendment aligns EN ISO 17871:2020 with related ISO standards to ensure consistent testing methods, specifications, and quality assurance across different valve types and applications.

Applications

  • Gas Cylinder Manufacturing
Ensures quick-release cylinder valves meet rigorous safety and performance criteria essential for secure gas storage and transport.

  • Safety Systems in Firefighting and Industrial Areas
Valves designed under this standard can be used in fixed fire-fighting systems installed in covered environments like buildings, ships, and oil platforms, benefiting from specified exceptions in leak tests based on ambient conditions.

  • Pressure Regulation and Control
Applicable to industries requiring precise pressure regulation, including medical gases, industrial gas supply, and specialty gases, where quick-release valves provide operational efficiency and emergency shutoff capabilities.

  • Quality Assurance and Compliance
Enables manufacturers and testing bodies to demonstrate conformity with European and international safety requirements, facilitating regulatory approvals and market access across CEN member states.

Related Standards

  • ISO 10297:2014+Amd.1:2017 – Specifications and type testing of cylinder valves
  • ISO 17879:2017 – Gas cylinders - Self-closing cylinder valves - Specification and type testing
  • ISO 23826:2021 – Gas cylinders - Ball valves - Specification and testing
  • ISO 14246 – Cylinder valve testing methods referenced for durability and leak tightness
  • EN ISO 17871:2020 – Original standard prior to Amendment 1

Summary

EN ISO 17871:2020/A1:2024 enhances the safety, reliability, and standardization of quick-release cylinder valves by integrating updated testing standards, refining performance requirements, and clarifying scope in relation to other cylinder valve standards. This amendment is essential for manufacturers, designers, and safety inspectors engaged in the gas cylinder industry, providing clear and consistent guidance to ensure valve integrity under various operating conditions. Implementing these specifications supports compliance with European regulations and international best practices in gas cylinder valve technology.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
