Overview

EN ISO 15877-5:2009/A1:2010 is a critical European standard amendment addressing plastics piping systems made from chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-C) used in hot and cold water installations. This amendment, prepared under the collaboration of CEN and ISO technical committees, updates fitness-for-purpose criteria specific to PVC-C systems. It incorporates new classifications and test pressures tailored for the long-term reliability and safety of PVC-C piping used particularly in low-temperature heating applications.

The standard ensures that piping systems meet stringent performance requirements for durability, pressure resistance, and temperature tolerances, essential for residential, commercial, and industrial water supply networks.

Key Topics

  • PVC-C Piping Systems: Focuses on chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride), a durable plastic material suitable for hot and cold water conveyance.
  • Fitness for Purpose: Defines system performance parameters including pressure ratings, temperature limits, and mechanical joint testing.
  • Service Conditions Classification: Introduces Class 4 piping as per ISO 10508, expanding usage to countries employing low-temperature heating with design pressures of 4 bar and 6 bar.
  • Hydrostatic Test Pressures: Specifies revised test pressures for solvent cement joints and mechanical joints considering different pressure classes and temperatures.
  • Test Duration and Stress Levels: Standardizes testing over 3000 hours under defined hydrostatic stresses, ensuring long-term integrity.
  • Amendment Compliance: Mandates national standards bodies in Europe to incorporate this amendment to maintain harmonized system safety and performance.

Applications

  • Hot and Cold Water Installations: Applies to plumbing systems in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings requiring reliable water supply under varying temperature and pressure conditions.
  • Low-temperature Heating Systems: Supports PVC-C piping usage in heating circuits with operating pressures up to 6 bar and temperatures up to 70°C, enhancing system design flexibility.
  • New Installations and Renovations: Guides engineers, designers, and contractors on PVC-C piping specifications for both new construction and upgrading existing systems to comply with European and international standards.
  • Quality Assurance and Testing: Provides benchmarks for manufacturers to certify piping components through hydrostatic and mechanical joint testing ensuring system robustness.

Related Standards

  • ISO 15877 Series: The broader series of standards covering specifications, classification, and testing methods for PVC-C piping systems.
  • ISO 10508: Defines classifications for piping systems used in building services, referenced for pressure and temperature class definitions.
  • EN ISO 15877-1 to EN ISO 15877-4: Cover general requirements, specific material properties, and test methods complementing Part 5’s focus on fitness-for-purpose.
  • CEN/CENELEC Regulations: Framework ensuring consistent adoption and application of European standards across member countries.
