Overview

EN 4301:2009 - "Aerospace series - Identification marking methods for engine items - Engineering requirements" (CEN) defines a standardized coding system, permitted marking processes, and general marking requirements for identification of aerospace engine items. It applies when the engineering drawing or design folder references EN 4301 and does not cover items requiring a separate identification plate. The standard was prepared under ASD‑STAN and adopted by CEN members.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Coding system for marks

    • Identification codes (Table 1) classify common mark elements such as: 1 = item identification number, 2 = company (designer) code, 3 = serialization number, 7 = curing date, 9 = manufacturing date, 10 = production source company code, plus other batch/inspection codes.
    • Standard mark combinations (Table 2) define line/sequence arrangements (e.g., two‑line, single‑line formats).
  • Arrangement and legibility

    • Rules for character height, inter‑character spacing and inter‑line spacing, and left alignment are specified to ensure consistent placement and readability.
    • Preferred character heights (mm) include: 0.8, 1, 1.25, 1.6, 2, 2.5, 3.15, 4, 5, 6.3, 8, 10, 12.5, 16.
  • Marking methods and classes (Table 3)

    • Both permanent (e.g., engraving, laser, dot‑peen, vibro‑peen, metal stamp, electrochemical etch, brand) and temporary (ink, paint, labels, tags) methods are covered.
    • Marking codes identify method families and variants (e.g., 02F = dot‑peen 5×7 matrix, 15 = laser). Depth ranges and marking class letters are defined per method.
  • O.C.R. and 5×7 dot matrix

    • Annexes A–C address Optical Character Recognition (O.C.R.) requirements and 5×7 dot‑matrix character shapes for automatic identification.
  • General quality and materials

    • Requirements on process quality, marking quality (no excessive burrs or harmful residues), surface treatment compatibility (e.g., halogen considerations for titanium), temporary marks, re‑marking and final inspection marks.
  • Drawing notation

    • How to represent required marks and permitted processes on engineering drawings (EN4301‑code syntax and symbol).

Applications and who uses it

  • Who uses EN 4301:2009: aerospace designers, manufacturers, production sources, suppliers, subcontractors, quality/inspection engineers, production planners, and marking service providers.
  • Practical use cases:
    • Specifying mandatory identification marks on engine component drawings and design folders.
    • Selecting suitable permanent or temporary marking processes for serial tracking, batch control, inspection and traceability.
    • Ensuring compatibility of marking methods with material and finishing processes (e.g., titanium components, cast/forged parts).
    • Implementing machine‑readable marks (O.C.R./5×7) for automated parts tracking.

Related standards

  • EN ISO 3098‑2 (Lettering - Latin alphabet, numerals and marks) is normative for character shapes and writing style referenced by EN 4301.
  • Prepared by ASD‑STAN and published through CEN; national adoption required by CEN members.

Keywords: EN 4301:2009, identification marking, aerospace engine items, marking methods, coding system, dot‑peen, laser marking, O.C.R., traceability, character height, marking depth.
