Overview
CEN/TS 16360:2021 is a European Technical Specification developed by the Committee for Standardization (CEN) that provides a standardized test method for assessing the film extensibility of coating materials and systems applied on exterior wood. This specification is essential for manufacturers and testing laboratories involved in the development and quality control of wood coatings to ensure durability and mechanical integrity of coatings under outdoor conditions. Notably, the method is primarily designed for coatings on stable wood substrates before exposure to weathering.
Key Topics
- Film Extensibility Definition: The ability of a dry coating film to accommodate deformations of the wooden substrate without cracking, crucial for exterior wood subjected to environmental stresses and dimensional changes.
- Test Principle: A metal plate fitted with 12 differently sized cones is pressed into coated wooden panels under controlled conditions. After indentation, the coating film is examined microscopically for concentric cracks indicating failure in extensibility.
- Wood Substrate Preparation: Uses selected Norway spruce panels with specific growth rates, density, and grain orientation to provide a stable and consistent substrate that mimics real exterior wood conditions.
- Coating Application: Coatings are applied following the manufacturer’s guidelines for wet film thickness and allowed to cure under controlled temperature and humidity before testing.
- Testing Apparatus and Procedure:
- Cone plate with defined dimensions and angles for indentation.
- Universal testing machine to apply consistent indentation force and speed.
- Magnifying microscope (minimum 10×) for crack inspection.
- Crack Evaluation: Identification of concentric cracks ≥2 mm in length within the indented areas categorizes the coating's failure point. Radial or grain-direction cracks are excluded from failure assessment.
- Test Reporting: Detailed documentation requirements include test conditions, equipment, sample information, results, and responsible personnel to ensure traceability and reproducibility.
Applications
- Coating Manufacturers: Allows product performance benchmarking for exterior wood coatings, ensuring formulations provide adequate flexibility to resist cracking.
- Quality Control Laboratories: Provides a repeatable and standardized test for evaluating the mechanical robustness of coating films on wood substrates during R&D and routine quality assurance.
- Wood Product Industries: Supports assessment of protective film durability on wood surfaces used in outdoor applications such as cladding, decking, and joinery, enhancing product lifespan.
- Research and Development: Enables studies on the mechanical behavior of wood coatings before and after accelerated weathering or environmental exposure by comparing extensibility ratings.
- Regulatory Compliance: Assists compliance with European standards related to paints and varnishes for exterior wood, complementing related weathering and durability tests.
Related Standards
- EN 927-3:2019 - Specifies natural weathering tests for coating systems for exterior wood, supporting evaluation of long-term durability alongside CEN/TS 16360.
- EN ISO 4618:2014 - Defines terms and definitions related to paints and varnishes, ensuring consistent terminology in the assessment of coating properties.
- ISO 554 - Provides standardized conditions for conditioning and testing materials, crucial for preparing wood and coatings in this test method.
- ISO 13061-2 - Describes determination of wood density, important for selecting and preparing the wooden panels used as substrates.
- EN 13696:2008 - Details test methods for elasticity and impact resistance of coated wood flooring, complementary in evaluating mechanical film properties for interior wood also referenced in CEN/TS 16360.
