Fibre-cement pipelines - Guide for laying and on-site work practices

This draft European Standard, applies to both types of fibre-cement pipes AT and NT as defined in EN 512:1994, gives installation recommendations for this pipelines in above or below ground situations. It complements the general principles for all types of water supply systems specified in EN 805:2000, "Water supply - Requirements for systems and components outside buildings", and should be used in conjunction with that standard. This standard gives guidance in on-site working methods and in the selection and use of approved tools for cutting and machining fibre-cement pipes. This standard does not cover the following : a) installation by thrust boring and pipe jacking methods which require the use of highly specialized techniques ; b) problems caused by the use of special installations procedures (e.g. removal of pile sheeting in very deep trenches, etc.).

Overview

EN 1444:2000 - Fibre-cement pipelines - Guide for laying and on-site work practices is a CEN European Standard that provides practical installation recommendations for fibre-cement pipes of types AT and NT (as defined in EN 512:1994). The standard addresses best practices for laying fibre-cement pipelines in both above-ground and below-ground situations and gives guidance on on-site working methods, including the selection and use of approved tools for cutting and machining fibre-cement pipes. EN 1444 complements the general principles for water distribution systems set out in EN 805:2000 and should be used together with that standard.

Key Topics

  • Scope and applicability
    • Applies to fibre-cement pipe types AT and NT (EN 512).
    • Intended for typical above- and below-ground installations.
  • On-site working practices
    • Recommendations for safe handling, site preparation and coordinated on-site workflows.
  • Cutting and machining
    • Guidance on approved tools and methods for cutting, sawing and machining fibre-cement materials to avoid damage and health risks.
  • Tool selection and use
    • Criteria for choosing appropriate cutting/machining tools and protective measures.
  • Complementary standards
    • Use in conjunction with EN 805:2000 (water supply systems) and EN 512.
  • Exclusions
    • Does not cover highly specialized installation techniques such as thrust boring and pipe jacking, nor very specialized procedures (e.g., removal of pile sheeting in very deep trenches).

Applications

Who uses EN 1444 and why:

  • Water utilities and municipal engineers - to specify and verify proper installation of fibre-cement mains and service pipes.
  • Civil construction contractors and pipeline installers - for safe, damage-minimizing on-site practices and correct cutting/machining procedures.
  • Design engineers and specifiers - to reference installation recommendations when designing distribution systems that include fibre-cement pipelines.
  • Procurement and quality managers - to ensure conformity with European guidance for long-term pipeline performance.

Benefits and practical value:

  • Reduces installation-related damage and service failures.
  • Improves worker safety through recommended tool use and work methods.
  • Ensures compatibility with broader water supply system requirements (EN 805).

Related Standards

  • EN 805:2000 - Water supply - Requirements for systems and components outside buildings (complements EN 1444)
