Overview

EN 15482:2012 (CEN) is the European standard for sodium permanganate used in the treatment of water intended for human consumption. It defines the identity, physical and chemical characteristics, minimum purity requirements, test and sampling methods, and provides practical information on use, labelling, transport and storage. The standard applies to commercial permanganate solutions typically supplied at mass fractions from 20% to 40% and clarifies obligations for suppliers and users when impurities or by‑products are present.

Key Topics

  • Identification and composition
    • Chemical name: sodium permanganate (NaMnO4), CAS 10101-50-5.
    • Commercial solutions: concentrated aqueous solutions, mass fraction commonly 20–40%.
    • Example densities (at ~22 °C): 20% ≈ 1.164 g/ml, 30% ≈ 1.266 g/ml, 40% ≈ 1.374 g/ml.
  • Physical & chemical properties
    • Dark purple solution; highly soluble and a very strong oxidising agent.
    • Decomposes with concentrated acids, hydrogen peroxide or organics; slow hydrolysis in air producing MnO2 (brown/black solid).
  • Purity criteria & chemical limits
    • Insoluble manganese dioxide (insoluble matter) ≤ 0.055% (mass fraction).
    • Specified impurity limits (mg/kg of NaMnO4, 100% basis): Arsenic ≤ 20; Cadmium ≤ 50; Chromium ≤ 50; Mercury ≤ 10; Nickel ≤ 50; Lead ≤ 50; Antimony ≤ 50; Selenium ≤ 50.
  • Test methods & sampling
    • Sampling rules for drums, bottles, tanks and tankers follow ISO 3165 / ISO 6206 principles.
    • Analytical references include ICP-OES and atomic absorption standards (normative references listed).
  • Labelling, transport & storage
    • Requirements for delivery forms, EU labelling, transportation regulations and safe storage are included.
  • Safety & use information
    • Annex A: origin, manufacturing, functional use in water treatment, dosing considerations and secondary effects.
    • Annex B: general safety, handling, emergency, first aid and spillage guidance.

Applications

  • Ensures consistent quality and safety of sodium permanganate used for:
    • Drinking water treatment (oxidation of organic compounds, taste/odor control, manganese/iron removal).
    • Municipal and industrial water treatment processes where permanganate is applied.
  • Primary users:
    • Water utilities, process engineers, treatment plant operators
    • Chemical manufacturers and suppliers
    • Analytical laboratories and conformity assessors
    • Regulatory authorities and procurement teams

Related Standards

  • EN 12672:2008 (basis for parts of this document)
  • Normative analytical and sampling references cited in EN 15482:2012 include EN 1233, EN ISO 11885, EN ISO 11969, EN ISO 12846, ISO 3165, ISO 6206, ISO 8288, ISO 9965.
  • Use in context with national water quality regulations - conformity with EN 15482:2012 does not automatically imply regulatory approval in all Member States.
