Overview

EN 2714-011:2005 is a European aerospace standard developed by CEN that specifies the requirements for UV laser printable DM family electrical cables. These are single and multicore screened (spiral) and jacketed lightweight cables designed primarily for on-board electrical systems in aircraft. The standard ensures reliable cable performance across extreme operating temperatures ranging from -55 °C to 260 °C, with cold test capability down to -65 °C. This product standard provides comprehensive guidance on materials, construction, marking, testing, and quality assurance for aerospace electrical cables.

Key Topics

  • Cable Types: Single and multicore screened (spiral) and jacketed lightweight cables from the DM family.
  • Operating Temperatures: Certified for use at -55 °C to 260 °C, with validated performance down to -65 °C in cold tests.
  • Materials and Construction: Includes nickel-plated copper stranded spiral screens and a dual-layer outer jacket combining polyimide and polytetrafluoroethylene designed to withstand harsh aerospace environments.
  • Marking and Identification: UV laser printable cables must support qualified compatible markings that meet EN 3838 standards for user-applied markings, ensuring traceability and compliance.
  • Testing and Performance: The cables undergo rigorous tests including ohmic resistance, insulation resistance, voltage proof, thermal shock, bending, flammability, abrasion resistance, and laser markability based on referenced aerospace test methods such as EN 3475-100.
  • Quality Assurance: Compliance with aerospace quality management standards (EN 9133) ensures consistent product reliability and manufacturing excellence.

Applications

EN 2714-011:2005 cables are specifically engineered for aircraft on-board electrical systems where high performance under extreme temperature ranges is critical. Typical applications include:

  • Avionics wiring harnesses requiring lightweight, durable, and flexible cables.
  • Aircraft general-purpose electrical circuits exposed to temperature extremes and demanding environmental conditions.
  • Systems where permanent, high-contrast UV laser markings are necessary for cable identification and maintenance traceability.
  • Aerospace manufacturing environments requiring certification and conformity with stringent quality assurance practices.

Related Standards

  • EN 2235: Technical specifications for single and multicore electrical cables, screened and jacketed, serving as a foundational reference.
  • EN 2267-007: Defines the DMA family of electrical cables with ink-jet print marking, complementary to the DM family cables in EN 2714-011.
  • EN 3475-100: Aerospace cable test methods covering general testing procedures referenced in EN 2714-011.
  • EN 3838: Requirements and tests for user-applied markings on aerospace electrical cables, ensuring marking durability and readability.
  • EN 4434: Copper or copper alloy lightweight conductors product standard used in cable core construction.
  • EN 9133: Aerospace quality management systems for qualification procedures of standard aerospace parts, ensuring production consistency.

EN 2714-011:2005 forms a critical part of the aerospace cable standards, focusing on durability, safety, and traceability for wiring in harsh aviation environments. It supports aerospace manufacturers and maintenance organizations seeking certified cable products that meet operational demands including extreme temperatures and special marking capabilities using UV laser technology.
