Overview

prEN 13075-2: Bitumens and Bituminous Binders – Determination of Breaking Behaviour – Part 2: Determination of Fines Mixing Time of Cationic Bituminous Emulsions is a European draft standard developed by CEN/TC 336. This document specifies a laboratory method for the determination of fines mixing time in diluted cationic bituminous emulsions under standardized conditions. The fines mixing time test is designed to assess the point at which a mineral filler, when mixed with a bituminous emulsion, induces breaking and loss of mixability. This property is crucial for ensuring the proper performance of bituminous emulsions in road construction and maintenance.

Compliance with this standard supports consistent quality control across different laboratories and users, ensuring reliable assessment of cationic bituminous emulsions. Manufacturers, laboratories, and quality assurance teams in the road construction industry benefit from adopting this standard to meet regulatory and performance requirements.

Safety Note: The procedure may involve hazardous materials and operations. It is the responsibility of users to identify and control these risks, implement suitable safety measures, and comply with local regulations.

Key Topics

  • Fines Mixing Time Definition: The test determines the time in seconds during which a mixture of mineral filler and bituminous emulsion remains mixable before noticeable breaking or loss of workability.
  • Test Conditions: The procedure involves standardized environmental, material, and operational requirements to ensure repeatable and reliable results.
  • Reference Fillers: The standard mandates the use of specified fillers such as Forshammer SE, Q92, or Sikaisol for consistent comparative measurement.
  • Precision and Reporting: Guidance on expressing results and test reporting, including documentation of test conditions, sample identification, materials used, and any deviations.
  • Safety and Compliance: Emphasizes the need for robust health, safety, and environmental practices during laboratory work.

Applications

This standard has practical relevance across all segments involved with cationic bituminous emulsions:

  • Quality Control in Manufacturing: Bituminous emulsion producers use this method to assess and optimize product formulation, ensuring predictable breaking behaviour for effective application.
  • Road and Pavement Construction: Applications include optimizing the compatibility of emulsions with local aggregates and fillers, improving performance in cold-mix asphalt, surface treatments, and tack coats.
  • Laboratory Testing: Accredited laboratories utilize the prEN 13075-2 methodology to ensure compliance with industry specifications and meet client or regulatory requirements.
  • Specification and Regulation: Road authorities and engineering consultants integrate this standard into project specifications, procurement processes, and compliance monitoring.
  • R&D and Product Development: The standard provides a reliable benchmark for comparison in developing new bituminous emulsion formulations for modern pavement solutions.

Related Standards

Several CEN and international standards complement prEN 13075-2 in the bituminous materials sector:

  • EN 13075-1, Bitumens and Bituminous Binders: Determination of Breaking Behaviour – Part 1: Determination of Breaking Value of Cationic Bituminous Emulsions
  • EN 58, Bitumen and Bituminous Binders – Sampling of Bituminous Binders
  • EN 12594, Bitumens and Bituminous Binders – Preparation of Test Samples
  • EN 12597, Bitumens and Bituminous Binders – Terminology
  • EN ISO 3696:1995, Water for Analytical Laboratory Use – Specification and Test Methods
  • EN 933 series, Tests for Geometrical Properties of Aggregates

By referencing these related standards, prEN 13075-2 ensures a harmonized approach for testing, reporting, and terminology across the bituminous binders industry, enhancing reliability and facilitating cross-border project implementation.

Organizations implementing this standard position themselves for greater quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and improved performance in infrastructure development and maintenance projects.

a) Clause 5, “Reagents and materials”: in paragraph 5.1 the naming “Caolin” for the Q92 filler, which
could lead to confusion with the mineralogical nature of kaolin, has been removed;
b) Clause 6, “Apparatus”, has been updated and revised, standardizing the use of the metrological
concept of “maximal permissible measurement error” for describing the measurement precision;
c) Annex A, “Characteristics of the reference fillers”, has been revised: the Sikaisol filler, which
production has been disrupted, has been downgraded to the third place in the reference fillers list;
d) in paragraph A2 the particle size distribution envelope of the Q92 filler has been updated and
tightened, thanks to the to process improvements brought by the producer.
