Overview

EN 12845-2:2024/prA1 is a draft amendment to the European standard for fixed firefighting systems, specifically focusing on automatic sprinkler systems. This part 2 of the EN 12845 series addresses the design and installation of Early Suppression Fast Response (ESFR) and Control Mode Specific Application (CMSA) sprinkler systems. Prepared by CEN Technical Committee CEN/TC 191, this standard update integrates recent technical modifications enhancing the applicability, spacing, and installation requirements for ESFR and CMSA sprinklers.

The document is intended to complement the main EN 12845 series by providing detailed requirements and guidance for these advanced sprinkler types within automatic sprinkler systems, which are crucial for rapid fire suppression and control in varied commercial and industrial settings.

Key Highlights:

  • Specification of sprinkler types, spacing, clearance, and positioning.
  • Detailed provisions for ceilings and roof conditions including slopes and skylight protection.
  • Updated requirements for obstruction scenarios and vertical clearances.
  • Enhanced installation guidance particularly for wet-pipe systems and dry-pipe or pre-action systems.
  • Modifications to terminology for clarity and consistency (e.g., replacing “head” with “sprinkler”).

Key Topics

Sprinkler System Design Requirements

  • Use of ESFR sprinklers as ceiling and in-rack sprinklers to optimize suppression capabilities.
  • CMSA sprinkler spacing and location criteria adapted to accommodate specific fire risks.
  • Defined geometric criteria including ceiling slope, vertical clearance below sprinklers, and obstruction effects.
  • Specific design methods for ensuring spray coverage under unobstructed and obstructed ceilings, including solid ceiling structural members with less than 70% open area.

Installation Practices

  • Protection measures for skylights and plastic skylights, necessitating supplemental sprinklers to maintain coverage integrity.
  • Inclusion of new design tables and formula updates for sprinkler spacing and count, ensuring enhanced fire protection density.
  • Special considerations for dry-pipe and pre-action systems reflecting changes in operational characteristics.
  • Requirements for vertical barriers and aisle widths in rack storage to support effective sprinkler deployment.

Technical Updates and Clarifications

  • Modifications to terminology and definitions to align with related standards such as EN 17451 and EN 12845 parts 2 and 3.
  • Clarification on longitudinal and transverse flue space minimum distances.
  • Removal and replacement of older clauses to improve standard coherence and eliminate redundancies.
  • New keys and legends for figures supporting spatial layouts of sprinkler arrays and obstructions.

Applications

EN 12845-2:2024/prA1 serves as an essential reference for:

  • Fire safety engineers designing automatic sprinkler systems using ESFR and CMSA sprinklers.
  • Installation professionals ensuring compliance with up-to-date European design guidelines.
  • Facility managers optimizing fire protection in warehouses, storage racks, and industrial buildings where early suppression and control mode sprinkler systems are employed.
  • Architects and consultants integrating fire suppression into building designs with complex ceiling and storage configurations.
  • Regulatory bodies and authorities setting national fire safety codes addressing automatic sprinkler installation.

Using this standard helps enhance fire safety performance by ensuring sprinkler systems are designed and installed to meet modern fire risk challenges, especially in high-challenge storage and industrial settings.

Related Standards

EN 12845-2:2024/prA1 is closely linked with several other standards essential for comprehensive fire protection system design:

  • EN 12845:2015 + A1:2019 – The core standard for fixed firefighting systems and automatic sprinkler system requirements, forming the basis for this amendment.
  • EN 17451 – Specifies testing and maintenance requirements applicable to fire sprinkler systems.
  • EN 12845-3 – Covers installation and design aspects complementary to part 2, offering broader guidance for automatic sprinkler systems.

Additionally, national standards and regulations may supplement or modify requirements in EN 12845-2 depending on country-specific fire safety legislation. Practitioners must consider those in conjunction with this European standard to ensure full compliance.
