Bituminous mixtures - Test methods - Part 42: Amount of foreign matter in reclaimed asphalt

This document specifies a visual method of determining the amount and components of coarse foreign matter in reclaimed asphalt. A method for determining the amount and components of finer foreign matter in reclaimed asphalt is given in Annex A. This method does not completely categorize the foreign matter that can occur in reclaimed asphalt.
NOTE For the use of reclaimed asphalt in bituminous mixtures it is important to know the components in the reclaimed asphalt and to know to what extent coarse foreign matter is present that can influence the properties of the bituminous mixture.

Overview

EN 12697-42:2021 specifies a visual test method to determine the amount and components of coarse foreign matter in reclaimed asphalt. An informative Annex A provides an optional procedure for finer foreign matter. The method helps stakeholders assess feedstock quality and the suitability of reclaimed asphalt for reuse in bituminous mixtures.

Key procedural features from the standard:

  • Representative sampling (feedstock inspection; sample ≥ 20 kg for coarse fraction).
  • Sieving to isolate the retained fraction (nominal 8 mm aperture) and, where applicable, a finer fraction (nominal 4 mm in Annex A).
  • Division into two independent sub-samples and visual sorting of each sub-sample.
  • Mass determination to the nearest 1 g and reporting as percentage by mass to the nearest 0.1%.

Note: the method does not completely categorise every type of foreign matter that might occur in reclaimed asphalt; precision data are not available.

Key Topics

  • Scope and purpose: Identify and quantify coarse foreign matter (>8 mm) in processed reclaimed asphalt; Annex A covers finer foreign matter (4–8 mm).
  • Classification: Each sub-sample is sorted into:
    • Natural aggregate and material derived from asphalt
    • Group 1 materials: cement concrete (and products), bricks, sub-base materials (excluding natural aggregate), cement mortar, metal
    • Group 2 materials: synthetic materials, wood, plastics
  • Apparatus & materials:
    • Sieve (8 mm, EN 933-2) and optional 4 mm sieve for finer fraction
    • Balance (weigh to nearest 1 g), sampling divider (EN 932-1 or EN 12697-27)
    • Hydrochloric acid 1 mol/l, hydrocarbon solvent, water; dichloromethane may be used to help identify asphalt
  • Procedure highlights:
    • Inspect feedstock, sieve, split retained fraction into two independent sub-samples
    • Visually sort, wash if necessary, and, where doubt exists, use HCl to identify concrete and solvents for asphalt
    • If the two independent analyses differ by more than 5% by mass for coarse foreign matter, investigate and, if unresolved, retake a representative sample
  • Reporting: Average results of both analyses (to 0.1% by mass) and document sample ID, feedstock source, tonnage, composition breakdown, deviations and unusual observations.

Applications

  • Quality control of reclaimed asphalt feedstock before inclusion in new bituminous mixtures
  • Material assessment for blending decisions and specification compliance
  • Risk mitigation by identifying contaminants (concrete, metals, plastics, wood) that may affect binder content, compaction or long-term performance

Safety note: the method uses solvents and acids. Follow applicable occupational exposure limits, ventilation and handling procedures.
