Overview
EN ISO 11290-1:2017/A1:2026 is an international standard published by CEN that specifies a horizontal method for detecting and enumerating Listeria monocytogenes and Listeria spp. in the food chain. This amendment introduces important updates, focusing specifically on:
- The inclusion of guidance for storage of samples prior to analysis
- Changes to the specified control strain used for performance testing of culture media and reagents
These updates enhance harmonization and traceability in food safety laboratories, supporting quality assurance for microbiological testing and better protection against Listeria contamination in food products.
Key Topics
Key updates in this amendment include:
Sample Storage Prior to Analysis
- Laboratories must ensure samples are representative and not altered during transport or storage.
- For storage conditions, laboratories should follow ISO 7218. If not feasible, alternative storage conditions with demonstrated stability for Listeria spp. must be fully reported.
- Reference to ISO/TS 17728 for food/feed sampling and ISO 18593 for environmental samples.
Control Strain for Quality Assurance
- Replacement of Listeria monocytogenes WDCM 00109 with WDCM 00231 for performance testing of culture media and reagents.
- Supporting data for this change are available on the ISO standards platform.
- Performance testing should align with ISO 11133 regarding productivity, specificity, and selectivity.
Performance Testing Procedures
- Detailed procedures and criteria for performance testing of culture media and reagents are provided, ensuring reliable detection and identification of Listeria.
- Tables specify incubation conditions, functions, control strains, and minimum requirements for productivity, selectivity, and specificity.
Applications
EN ISO 11290-1:2017/A1:2026 has practical applications across the food industry and laboratory services involved in food safety, including:
Food Processing and Manufacturing
- Monitoring and controlling Listeria monocytogenes contamination in ready-to-eat foods, dairy products, meats, fish, and other high-risk foods.
- Ensuring compliance with food safety regulations and HACCP systems by verifying sample handling and laboratory testing processes.
Official Food Control and Third-Party Testing
- Supporting national food safety authorities and private laboratories in implementing standardized methods for detecting Listeria.
- Providing reliable and harmonized results for regulatory compliance and quality assurance.
Accredited Laboratories
- Enhancing laboratory accreditation and traceability by ensuring up-to-date methodologies for sample storage, method validation, and control strain selection.
- Facilitating interlaboratory comparisons and demonstrating consistent quality performance in routine testing.
Related Standards
For broader alignment and improved implementation, users of EN ISO 11290-1:2017/A1:2026 should also be familiar with these related standards:

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the

Clause 7
Replace the text with the following:
7 Sampling, transportation and storage of samples
Sampling is not part of the method specified in this document. Follow the specific International Standard
dealing with the product concerned. If there is no specific International Standard dealing with the sampling
of the product concerned, it is recommended that the parties concerned come to an agreement on this
subject. Recommended sampling techniques are given in the following documents:
[3]
— ISO/TS 17728 for food and animal feed;
[31]
— ISO 707 for milk and milk products;
[2]
— ISO 18593 for surfaces (see also Reference [24]).
It is important that the laboratory receives a sample which is representative of the product under
consideration. The sample should not have been damaged or changed during transport or storage.
[32]
NOTE 1 Shelf-life studies are not in the scope of this document but of ISO 20976-1 .
For storage conditions before analysis, see ISO 7218.
If ISO 7218 conditions cannot be applied, other storage conditions may be used provided it can be
demonstrated that the alternative conditions do not affect the contamination levels of Listeria spp./Listeria
monocytogenes. These conditions should be detailed and justified in the test report.
NOTE 2 Supporting data for storage of food samples before detection of Listeria monocytogenes or Listeria spp. are

9.5.2.5.2 and 9.5.2.6
Replace all instances of Listeria monocytogenes WDCM 00109 with Listeria monocytogenes WDCM 00231.

Clause B.5
Replace the text with the following:
B.5 Performance testing for the quality assurance of the culture media and reagents
The definition of productivity, specificity and selectivity are specified in ISO 11133. In general, follow the
procedures for performance testing described in ISO 11133. Table B.1 provides the performance testing
for the quality assurance of the culture media for the enrichment and isolation. Table B.2 provides the
performance testing for the quality assurance of the culture media and reagents for the confirmation tests.
For the second isolation medium, use performance testing according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
NOTE For productivity testing, in the case of detection of Listeria spp., it can be informative to add another control
strain (from another Listeria species sensu stricto).
