Paints and varnishes - Drying tests - Part 2: Pressure test for stackability (ISO 9117-2:2010)

ISO 9117-2:2010 specifies a test method for determining, under standard conditions, whether a single‑coat film or a multi-coat system of paints or related materials, after a specified drying period, is sufficiently dry to resist damage when two painted surfaces or one painted surface and another surface are placed in contact under pressure.
The method is intended to simulate the conditions when painted articles are stacked upon each other.

Overview

EN ISO 9117-2:2010 - "Paints and varnishes - Drying tests - Part 2: Pressure test for stackability (ISO 9117-2:2010)" specifies a laboratory method to determine whether a single-coat film or multi-coat system is sufficiently dry after a defined drying period to resist damage when two painted surfaces (or a painted and another surface) are placed in contact under pressure. Commonly called the pressure test for stackability or block resistance test, it simulates practical conditions when painted articles are stacked during storage, transport or production.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Tests resistance to damage caused by unwanted adhesion between adjacent painted surfaces after a specified drying period.
  • Test conditions: Performed at (23 ± 2) °C and ambient relative humidity (RH measured and reported); RH control in a climate chamber is not mandatory.
  • Specimen preparation: Panels prepared per ISO 1514, coated as specified, dried/aged horizontally with free air circulation, then cut into at least six strips of (30 ± 1) mm width (or larger pieces up to 100 × 75 mm if necessary).
  • Apparatus: Plunger with a 50 ± 1 mm diameter head and mass (250 ± 2) g, recommended ball-joint alignment; additional weights in the range 100 g–1 000 g to apply a defined load.
  • Procedure: Two coated test pieces are overlapped at 90° and loaded for a specified time. After removal, surfaces are examined for impressions, sticking, detachment or other damage.
  • Pressure calculation: Pressure on the contact area is calculated from the combined masses and the contact area (formula provided in the standard).
  • Reporting: Test report must include product ID, specimen and coating preparation details, dry film thickness (ISO 2808), RH, applied load/pressure, contact time, time to examination, test results and any deviations or anomalies.
  • Precision: No precision data are currently available in the standard.

Applications and who uses it

This standard is used by:

  • Paint and varnish manufacturers for product development and QC.
  • Independent test laboratories and certification bodies verifying stackability and block resistance.
  • OEMs and specifiers in industries such as furniture, automotive, metal packaging, appliance manufacturing and powder-coating, where stacked handling or storage occurs.
  • Logistics and production engineers assessing risk of sticking or surface damage during handling, packing and transport.

Practical uses include validating drying schedules, specifying allowable post-dry handling times, and comparing formulations or curing regimes for stackable finished goods.

Related standards

  • ISO 9117 series: Part 1 (through-dry state/time) and Part 3 (surface-drying ballotini test); other parts under preparation.
  • Normative references used in EN ISO 9117-2: ISO 1513, ISO 1514, ISO 2808, ISO 3270, ISO 15528 (sample prep, panels, film thickness, conditioning and sampling).

ISO 9117-2:2010(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 9117-2 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and varnishes, Subcommittee SC 9,
General test methods for paints and varnishes.
This first edition of ISO 9117-2 cancels and replaces ISO 4622:1992, which has been technically revised. The
main changes are as follows:
a) the method has been integrated into the ISO 9117 series as Part 2, for determination of the drying of
paints and varnishes;
b) a “terms and definitions” clause has been added;
c) a “principle” clause has been added;
d) the requirement for relative humidity during the procedure has been deleted, i.e. it is not necessary to
carry out the test in a climate chamber;
e) text from the former annex A headed “required supplementary information” has been integrated into the
test report.
ISO 9117 consists of the following parts, under the general title Paints and varnishes — Drying tests:
⎯ Part 1: Determination of through-dry state and through-dr
