Overview

EN 15023-3:2010 - "Copper and copper alloys - Determination of nickel content - Part 3: Flame atomic absorption spectrometric method (FAAS)" is a CEN European Standard that specifies a validated FAAS procedure for measuring nickel mass fractions in copper and copper alloys (unwrought, wrought and cast). The method applies to nickel contents from 0.001 % to 6.0 % and describes sample dissolution, reagent use, instrument setup and calibration for reliable nickel determination.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and applicability: Nickel mass fractions between 0.001 % and 6.0 % in copper and copper alloys (unwrought, wrought, cast).
  • Analytical principle: Dissolution of a test portion in hydrochloric and nitric acids, masking of interferences with lanthanum(III) chloride, and measurement by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) using a nickel hollow‑cathode lamp (measurement lines at 232.0 nm or 352.4 nm).
  • Reagents: Analytical-grade HCl, HNO3, lanthanum chloride solution, and certified nickel standard solutions (stock and diluted standards). Use of distilled or equivalent water is required.
  • Apparatus: Atomic absorption spectrometer with an air/acetylene burner and nickel hollow‑cathode lamp.
  • Sample preparation: Sampling per ISO 1811‑1 / ISO 1811‑2; test material prepared as fine drillings, chips or millings (max thickness 0.5 mm). Dissolution procedures and dilution volumes are specified for different nickel concentration ranges.
  • Calibration and quality control:
    • Calibration solutions prepared with nickel standards and copper base solutions to match matrix effects (chloride/nitrate/copper levels) of test solutions.
    • Blank tests, check tests (using reference material or synthetic samples), and establishment of a calibration curve are required.
  • Accuracy and precision: Clause on precision revised in this edition; the standard includes requirements for expressing results and test reporting.

Applications and users

EN 15023-3:2010 is used by:

  • Metallurgical and chemical testing laboratories performing nickel content analysis in copper and copper alloys.
  • Manufacturers of copper alloys, foundries and fabricators for quality control and compliance testing.
  • Certification bodies and materials inspectors needing standardized FAAS procedures.
  • R&D and failure-analysis teams investigating alloy composition effects.

Typical applications include product certification, incoming material inspection, process control, and verification of alloy specifications where accurate nickel determination is required.

Related standards

  • EN 15023 series - Part 1 (spectrophotometric) and Part 2 (titrimetric) - complementary methods for nickel determination.
  • ISO 1811-1 and ISO 1811-2 - sampling and preparation of copper and copper alloy samples.
