Overview

EN 12847:2022 - published by CEN - specifies a laboratory method to determine the settling tendency of bituminous emulsions. The settling tendency is measured as the difference in water content between the top and bottom layers of an emulsion sample after standing for a specified time at ambient temperature. The standard replaces EN 12847:2009 and clarifies options for water determination methods while including a safety warning about hazardous materials and laboratory practice.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definition: settling tendency (ST) = a − b, where a is the water content of the top layer and b is the water content of the bottom layer (mass %).
  • Test principle: pour a prepared emulsion sample into a 600 ml stoppered graduated cylinder (500 ml fill mark), let stand (t ± 4 h) at normal laboratory temperature (18 °C to 28 °C), then withdraw prescribed top and bottom test portions and measure their water contents.
  • Apparatus: modified 600 ml stoppered glass graduated cylinder with two closable side tubes (see EN 12847 figure), beakers and usual lab glassware.
  • Water-content methods: water content of test portions is determined using EN 1428 (azeotropic distillation), EN 1431 (residual binder/oil distillate method) or EN 16849 (drying-balance method). EN 12847:2022 explicitly permits EN 16849 under conditions (emulsions containing < 1.5 % volatile flux) and with temperature precautions - the chosen method must be reported.
  • Sampling and preparation: follow EN 58 for sampling and EN 12594 for sample preparation. No initial sieving at 0,500 mm is required.
  • Result expression: ST in mass percent, rounded to the nearest 0.1 %; report standing time t, water contents a and b, test method used, and any deviations.
  • Precision: repeatability and reproducibility are provided:
    • Repeatability r: 0–8 % ST → 0.4 %; >8 % → 5 % of result.
    • Reproducibility R: 0–8 % ST → 0.8 %; >8 % → 10 % of result.

Practical applications & users

  • Quality control laboratories testing bituminous emulsions for consistency and storage stability.
  • Manufacturers of bitumen and bituminous binders monitoring emulsion homogeneity and shelf life.
  • Pavement and road-construction specifiers verifying emulsion performance before use in asphalt coatings, surface treatments or cold-mix applications.
  • Independent test houses and certification bodies performing conformity testing against contract or regulatory criteria.
  • Research labs assessing formulation changes (emulsifiers, volatile components) that affect settling or separation behavior.

Related standards
