Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

The EN ISO 17491-4:2008 standard provides comprehensive methods for assessing the resistance of protective clothing to liquid chemical penetration through two distinct test methodologies. This standard is critical in ensuring personal safety in industries where chemical exposure is a risk. The scope of the standard is particularly well-defined, encompassing two specific methods that cater to different levels of exposure risk. Method A assesses the resistance of full-body protective clothing against low-level sprays, making it suitable for scenarios where the likelihood of exposure is minimal-such as inadvertent splashes. This method ensures that workers are safeguarded against low-volume incidents that can occur in various operational environments. Conversely, Method B focuses on high-level spray resistance, designed for clothing that boasts spray-tight connections. This is especially pertinent in scenarios where there is a significant risk of exposure to high-pressure sprays or larger quantities of liquid chemicals. The stringent testing requirements thereby enhance the reliability of protective gear, ensuring maximum protection for individuals engaged in high-stakes activities. The strengths of the EN ISO 17491-4:2008 standard lie in its robust testing protocols, which are essential for verifying the efficacy of protective clothing against liquid chemicals. By delineating two different levels of exposure, the standard allows manufacturers to tailor their products for specific use cases, enhancing the overall safety of workers. Furthermore, this standard remains highly relevant in the contemporary landscape of occupational health and safety, where the need for effective protective clothing is paramount. As industries evolve and the nature of chemical exposure risks expand, the EN ISO 17491-4:2008 standard ensures that best practices in testing and compliance are maintained. Thus, it not only facilitates regulatory adherence but also supports manufacturers in developing effective protective solutions that meet stringent safety requirements.
