Overview

EN 12259-2:1999/A2:2005 is a CEN amendment covering wet alarm valve assemblies used in fixed firefighting systems for sprinkler and water spray systems. This amendment (A2) updates material, construction, performance, marking and corrosion-resistance requirements so that alarm valves that previously did not conform can be brought within the standard’s requirements. It supports harmonized national adoption across CEN members and relates to EU safety directives.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Materials and construction: Bodies and covers must be cast iron, bronze, brass, monel, stainless steel, titanium or materials with equivalent properties. Cover fasteners must be steel, stainless steel, titanium or equivalent. Non-metallic parts and low-melting metals used in bodies/covers are allowed only if the sealing assembly still opens fully per Annex A and the valve meets performance clauses.
  • Fastener strength: Fastener design loads (excluding gasket compression) must meet tensile-strength criteria of ISO 898-1/2 or equivalent European standards when the valve is pressurized to the rated working pressure; the standard defines how to calculate the pressure area depending on gasket type.
  • Drain and connections: A drain connection downstream of the sealing assembly is mandatory with a minimum nominal size of 20 mm. The retard chamber must also have a connection of at least 20 mm for alarm devices.
  • Non-metallic elements and bearings: After ageing (Annex F), non-metallic components must show no cracking and must meet leak-resistance and performance tests (C.1, J, E.2 as applicable).
  • Clearances and corrosion protection: Sealing assembly bushings or hinge pin bearings must project sufficiently to maintain specified clearances (dimension A ≥ 1.5 mm where adjacent parts are not corrosion-resistant metals). Coatings must show no blistering, delamination, flaking or increased resistance when tested per Annex N.
  • Marking: Mandatory marking methods, character sizes and label types are defined (e.g., cast marking heights and minimum projections per Table 1).
  • Salt mist corrosion test (Annex N): Defines reagents (5 ± 0.5% NaCl), fog chamber parameters, spray pressure (0.7–1.7 bar), exposure (10 days at 35 ± 2 °C) and a 7-day drying period to evaluate coating deterioration.

Applications and who uses it

  • Manufacturers of wet alarm valves and sprinkler components use EN 12259-2:1999/A2:2005 to design and certify products.
  • Test laboratories perform the specified mechanical, leakage and corrosion tests.
  • System designers, installers and maintenance teams use the standard to select compliant components and verify installation requirements (drain size, retard chamber connections, clearances).
  • Specifiers, certifiers and procurement officers reference the standard when writing tender documents, approvals and compliance checks.

Related standards

  • Part of the EN 12259 series for sprinkler and water spray system components (consult other parts of EN 12259 for complementary requirements).
  • References to ISO 898 (tensile strength) are retained for fastener requirements or equivalent European standards.

The standard EN 12259-2:1999/A2:2005 pertains to fixed firefighting systems, specifically focusing on components for sprinkler and water spray systems, with an emphasis on wet alarm valve assemblies. This standard plays a crucial role in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of firefighting systems, which are essential for fire safety in various environments. One of the key strengths of this standard is its provision for the modification of tolerances. By allowing alarm valves that do not conform to the original EN 12259-2 criteria to still comply with the amended requirements, the standard promotes greater flexibility in the adoption of wet alarm valve assemblies. This is particularly relevant in today's rapidly advancing technology landscape, where adherence to strict manufacturing tolerances can sometimes hinder innovation and the integration of new designs into existing systems. Furthermore, the standard's relevance extends to enhancing interoperability among different manufacturers' components, thereby ensuring that fire safety measures maintain a high degree of effectiveness regardless of the sources of the components used. It fosters a more inclusive approach in the industry, which can lead to an increase in supply chain efficiency by accommodating various specifications while still prioritizing safety. Overall, EN 12259-2:1999/A2:2005 is instrumental in calibrating the delicate balance between stringent safety requirements and the practicalities of manufacturing variabilities in wet alarm valve assemblies, ensuring that high standards for fixed firefighting systems are not only maintained but also evolve in tandem with industry needs.
