Overview

EN 14488-2:2006 is a CEN (European) standard titled "Testing sprayed concrete - Part 2: Compressive strength of young sprayed concrete." It defines two in situ test methods to estimate the compressive strength of newly applied sprayed concrete (shotcrete). The standard is intended for quick, on-site assessment of early-age strength development and requires calibrated test equipment and documented procedures.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Two methods are specified to estimate in situ compressive strength of young sprayed concrete.
  • Measurement ranges:
    • Method A (Penetration needle / penetrometer): intended for approx. 0.2 MPa to 1.2 MPa.
    • Method B (Stud driving / pull-out): intended for approx. 3 MPa to 16 MPa.
  • Method A – Penetration needle:
    • Use a penetrometer that records force to ±10 N.
    • Needle: diameter 3.0 mm ±0.1 mm; tip taper 60° ±5°.
    • Penetrate to 15 mm ±2 mm in a single continuous push.
    • Perform 10 measurements rapidly (within 1 minute for strengths < 0.5 MPa) and record mean force.
    • Convert mean force to estimated compressive strength using the equipment producer’s calibration/conversion curve (no extrapolation).
  • Method B – Stud driving and pull-out:
    • Drive studs per manufacturer instructions (stud penetration ≥ 20 mm recommended).
    • Measure projecting length, then extract and record pull-out force. Pull-out equipment accuracy: max force indicated to ±5%.
    • Ten studs per test area, spacing > 80 mm, sprayed layer thickness ≥ 100 mm.
    • Correct pull-out readings with the supplied calibration curve and compute mean P/l (pull-out force/penetration depth) to estimate compressive strength. No extrapolation.
  • Calibration and reporting: Equipment must be supplied with certified calibration curves (examples in Annex A and B). Test reports must record location, times (spray completion, test start/finish), equipment type/serial, raw measurements and means.
  • Precision: No inter-laboratory precision data are provided in this standard.

Practical applications and users

  • Typical users: shotcrete/shotcrete contractors, tunnel and underground engineers, structural repair teams, site quality-control (QC) engineers, and manufacturers of penetrometers and stud-driving equipment.
  • Use cases: rapid on-site strength checks during tunneling, slope stabilization, lining repairs, sprayed concrete curing monitoring, and acceptance testing where early-age strength verification is required.

Related standards

  • EN 14488 series – Testing sprayed concrete:
    • Part 1: Sampling fresh and hardened concrete
    • Part 3–7: flexural strength, bond strength, energy absorption, thickness, fibre content
