Overview
EN 13177:2010 (CEN) covers synthetic methanol intended for use as a chemical in the treatment of water for human consumption. The standard defines the product identification, physical and chemical properties, minimum purity requirements, limits for key impurities and by‑products, and the corresponding test and sampling methods. Annex A provides informative guidance on origin, use and toxicological aspects; Annex B gives safety and emergency rules. Note: conformity with EN 13177:2010 does not replace national regulatory approvals - users must check local rules before application.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and identification
- Chemical name: methanol (methyl alcohol, CH3OH), CAS 67-56-1, relative molecular mass 32.04.
- Physical properties (typical values)
- Colourless liquid; miscible with water.
- Density (20 °C): pure methanol ≈ 0.7931 g/ml; table of density vs concentration provided.
- Boiling point (100 kPa): 64.6 °C; vapour pressure (20 °C): 12.7 kPa.
- Purity criteria
- Minimum 99.85% mass fraction pure synthetic methanol.
- Propan-2-one (acetone): < 30 mg/kg (100% methanol basis).
- Heavy metals limits: As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se - each max 0.01 mg/kg (100% basis).
- Test and sampling methods
- Sampling guidance (drums, bottles, tanks, tankers) per ISO 3165 and ISO 6206.
- Methanol content: measured by digital density meter at (20 ± 0.1) °C.
- Propan-2-one and volatile impurities: gas chromatography with internal standard (butan-2-one) and specified column/temperature regimes.
- Handling, labelling and storage
- Requirements for delivery, risk/safety labelling per EU directives, transportation rules, marking and storage; general safety and emergency procedures in Annex B.
Applications and practical value
- EN 13177:2010 is used to ensure that synthetic methanol supplied for water treatment meets defined quality, safety and analytical criteria.
- Practical benefits:
- Protects drinking-water quality by limiting contaminants and by-products.
- Provides standardised sampling and analytical methods for supplier testing and laboratory verification.
- Supports procurement specifications and supplier quality control.
Who should use this standard
- Water utility operators and treatment plant managers
- Chemical manufacturers and suppliers of methanol for water treatment
- Analytical and environmental laboratories performing conformity testing
- Regulatory bodies, consultants and procurement teams involved in drinking-water chemicals
