Overview

EN 681-1:1996/A2:2002 is a CEN European standard that specifies material requirements for vulcanized rubber used in elastomeric pipe joint seals for water and drainage applications. Amendment A2 (approved February 2002) updates the original EN 681-1:1996 and includes changes to factory production control, terminology (e.g., “categories” replacing “classes”) and conformity/CE marking provisions. The Annex ZA links the standard to the EU Construction Products Directive and clarifies that the standard’s scope excludes uses in contact with water intended for human consumption.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and intended use: Materials for pipe joint seals used in water and drainage systems (excludes drinking-water contact where noted).
  • Material performance: Requirements for dimensional tolerances, tightness (gas and liquid), and durability are specified or referenced; thresholds and test methods are linked to established ISO standards.
  • Referenced test standards:
    • Dimensional tolerance: ISO 3302
    • Tensile, hardness, compression and swelling: ISO 48, ISO 37, ISO 815, ISO 1817
    • Durability and ageing: ISO 188, ISO 1431-1, ISO 3384
  • Factory production control (FPC): Manufacturers must establish and maintain documented FPC systems to ensure ongoing conformity with the product standard.
  • Conformity and CE marking: Annex ZA defines attestation procedures (System 4 for the indicated uses), requirements for the EC Declaration of Conformity, and the information that must accompany CE marking (producer ID, year, product type/category, reference to EN 681-1, intended use, etc.).
  • Regulatory linkage: The amendment clarifies the relationship with EU Directives and provides an informative annex to support compliance with the Construction Products Directive (89/106).

Applications and who uses it

  • Manufacturers of vulcanized rubber seals - for material selection, production control and CE marking.
  • Product designers and engineers specifying seals for sewer, drainage and non-potable water pipe systems.
  • Testing laboratories and conformity assessors applying the referenced ISO test methods.
  • Procurement and compliance teams ensuring products meet European regulatory and CE marking requirements.
  • Standards bodies and certifying authorities implementing national adoption of the CEN text.

Related standards

This standard references multiple ISO test methods (ISO 3302, ISO 48, ISO 37, ISO 815, ISO 1817, ISO 188, ISO 1431-1, ISO 3384) for dimensional, mechanical and ageing tests. Users should consult EN 681-1 alongside these ISO standards and national implementations for full test procedures and acceptance criteria.
