Elastomeric seals - Materials requirements for pipe joint seals used in water and drainage applications - Part 3: Cellular materials of vulcanized rubber

This standard specifies requirements for materials used in vulcanized rubber seals of cellular materials for non pressurized drainage, sewerage and rainwater systems and non-pressure non-potable water supply (continuous flow up to 45 ºC). General requirements for the finished joint seals are also given; any additional requirements called for by the particular application are specified in the relevant product
standards taking into account that the performance of pipe joints is a function of the seal material properties, seal geometry and pipe joint design. This Standard is applicable to joint seals for pipeline materials of vitrified clay, fibre cement, concrete, reinforced concrete, plastics and glass-reinforced plastics. Joint seals made with an enclosed void as part of their design are included in the scope of this European Standard.

Overview

EN 681-3:2000 (CEN) sets material requirements for cellular vulcanized rubber used in elastomeric pipe joint seals for non‑pressurized water and drainage systems. The standard covers cellular (foamed) elastomer materials intended for joint seals in drainage, sewerage and rainwater systems, and for non‑pressure non‑potable water supply with continuous flow up to 45 °C. It also gives general requirements for finished joint seals and clarifies that additional product‑specific requirements are set out in relevant product standards.

Key topics and requirements

  • Material scope: Requirements apply specifically to cellular materials of vulcanized rubber used in pipe joint seals (i.e., foamed/porous elastomers).
  • System limitations: Intended for non‑pressurized systems - drainage, sewerage, rainwater, and non‑potable continuous flow up to 45 °C.
  • General seal requirements: Provides baseline requirements for finished joint seals (material performance, durability considerations) while recognizing that final performance depends on:
    • seal material properties
    • seal geometry
    • pipe joint design
  • Compatibility with pipe materials: Applicable to joints for pipelines made of vitrified clay, fibre cement, concrete, reinforced concrete, plastics, and glass‑reinforced plastics (GRP).
  • Design variants included: Joint seals incorporating an enclosed void as part of their design are within scope.
  • Application-specific requirements: The standard defers additional tests and limits to the relevant product standards where application context dictates further constraints.

Applications

EN 681-3 is used where reliable, resilient sealing is required in non‑pressurized water management systems, such as:

  • Gravity drainage and sewer systems
  • Rainwater and stormwater collection systems
  • Non‑potable continuous flow service lines (up to 45 °C) Manufacturers of cellular vulcanized rubber seals and suppliers of drainage and sewer pipe systems will apply this standard to ensure material suitability and regulatory compliance.

Who uses this standard

  • Seal and gasket manufacturers specifying materials and formulations for cellular elastomers
  • Product designers and joint engineers verifying seal performance in specific pipe geometries
  • Specifiers and procurement teams selecting compliant joint seals for infrastructure projects
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessors evaluating material properties and finished seal characteristics
  • Authorities and utilities responsible for water, drainage and sewerage infrastructure

Related standards

Refer to other CEN and product‑specific standards for detailed test methods, dimensional and performance requirements for finished joint seals and for pressurized applications. EN 681‑3 focuses specifically on the material properties of cellular vulcanized rubber for non‑pressurized systems.
