Overview

EN 681-2:2000/A1:2002 is a CEN European standard (amendment A1 to EN 681-2:2000) that specifies material requirements for thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) seals used in pipe joint seals for water and drainage applications. It covers thermoplastic elastomers intended for pipe joints in waste water discharge and drainage - explicitly excluding use in contact with drinking water. The amendment (approved February 2002) updates terminology (e.g., “categories” replacing “classes”) and factory production control provisions.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Material scope: Requirements apply to thermoplastic elastomeric materials used for pipe joint seals in drainage and wastewater systems (not for potable water).
  • Performance characteristics: The standard addresses dimensional tolerances, tightness (gas and liquid), durability and resistance to liquids and gases, with threshold values and categories referenced in tables (see table 2 and table 7.3 in the standard).
  • Testing and references: Specifies use of established test methods and international standards, for example:
    • Dimensional tolerance: ISO 3302-1
    • Mechanical and aging tests: ISO 48, ISO 37, ISO 815, ISO 1817
    • Durability/aging: ISO 188, ISO 3384, ISO 1431-1
  • Factory production control (FPC): Replaces the previous “internal quality control” term; manufacturers must implement FPC covering the characteristics in the standard (Clause 6 and 7).
  • Initial type testing: Required to demonstrate conformity of product characteristics (see Annex ZA and Table ZA.3).
  • CE marking and Declaration of Conformity: Annex ZA links the standard to the EU Construction Products Directive (89/106). Manufacturers must provide an EC Declaration of Conformity and include CE marking information (producer name/address, year of marking, product type/category, EN reference, intended use).

Applications and users

  • Who uses this standard:
    • Seal and TPE manufacturers - for material selection, production control and CE marking compliance.
    • Product designers and specification engineers - for specifying compliant pipe joint seals in drainage and wastewater systems.
    • Testing laboratories and certification bodies - for initial type testing and verification against referenced ISO test methods.
    • Regulatory authorities and procurement teams - to confirm compliance with EU Construction Products Directive requirements for non-potable water applications.
  • Typical applications: pipe joint seals in sewage, stormwater and other drainage systems where robust elastomeric sealing and durability are required.

Related standards

  • Other parts of the EN 681 series (covering different elastomer types) and the ISO standards cited within this document, including ISO 3302-1, ISO 48, ISO 37, ISO 815, ISO 1817, ISO 188, ISO 3384 and ISO 1431-1. These referenced standards define specific test methods and tolerances used to demonstrate conformity.
