Overview

EN 14955:2005 - Surfaces for sports areas - specifies a laboratory and field method for determining the composition and particle shape of unbound mineral surfaces for outdoor sports areas. Published by CEN (Technical Committee CEN/TC 217), the standard defines sampling, conditioning, classification and reporting procedures used to characterise unbound mineral infills and wearing layers used on outdoor sports pitches and courts.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and principle: Manual separation of grains by particle shape; composition of each shape expressed as a percentage by mass; shape described using a classification chart.
  • Apparatus: classification chart, trowel/cutting implement, pointed separator, analytical balance, smooth surface or illuminated frame, oven (105 ± 5 °C), optical microscope (min. 20x).
  • Sampling rules:
    • From stock pile: sample near the middle of the pile.
    • From bags: invert and mix, sample from centre.
    • From field: cut vertically through strata and collect top, middle and bottom layers.
  • Conditioning: dry sample in oven at (105 ± 5) °C for 24 h; cool to room temperature and mix thoroughly.
  • Procedure:
    • For particles ≥ 1 mm: take 10 g representative specimen (15 g if particles 3–6 mm), separate particles into piles by shape, record texture, structure and colour, weigh piles and calculate mass percentages.
    • For particles < 1 mm: prepare microscope slides, identify attributes under optical microscope and repeat across six subsamples to report modal results.
  • Classification attributes: shape (round, flat, irregular, angular), texture (rough, polished), structure (open, dense), colour. Classification charts and descriptions are provided (see Figures 1–2 in the standard).
  • Reporting: test report must reference EN 14955:2005 and include material type, specimen nature, sample source, overall thickness of sampled area and results presented per the standard’s chart.

Applications and who uses it

  • Applications:
    • Quality control of unbound mineral infill and wearing courses for outdoor sports fields, running tracks, and training areas.
    • Specification and acceptance testing for suppliers and contractors.
    • Forensic analysis after performance issues (drainage, compaction, particle degradation).
  • Primary users:
    • Testing laboratories and accredited inspection bodies.
    • Sports facility designers, turf managers and maintenance teams.
    • Material manufacturers, suppliers and installers specifying product conformance.
    • Contracting authorities and specifiers writing tender requirements.
