Surfaces for sport areas - Determination of thickness of unbound mineral surfaces for outdoor sports areas

This European Standard describes two methods for determining the thickness of granular materials within a structure.
The two methods can be used to provide an indication of the thickness of surfacing material, one using a steel tape, the other using a floating disc and a steel tape. Method 1 is applicable to layers within a profile. Method 2 measures the thickness of a material at the surface.

in Sportböden.

Overview

EN 14953:2005 is a European Standard developed by CEN for measuring the thickness of unbound mineral surfaces used in outdoor sports areas. Specifically, this standard details two practical methods for determining the thickness of granular surfacing materials within sport area structures. Ensuring the correct thickness of these layers is crucial for performance, safety, and durability of sports surfaces.

This standard provides essential guidance to construction professionals, sports facility managers, and quality controllers aiming to verify the integrity and compliance of mineral-based sports surfaces.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Measurement Methods:
EN 14953 defines two methods for thickness measurement:

    • Method 1: Profile and Divider Method – involves excavating a cross-sectional profile to measure strata thickness precisely within the structure.
    • Method 2: Floating Disc Method – employs a floating disc and steel tape for rapid surface thickness testing.
  • Method 1 – Profile and Divider Method:

    • Suitable for laboratory or on-site testing where profile removal does not damage the structure.
    • Utilizes excavation of a minimum 300 mm × 300 mm hole to expose layers.
    • Measures thickness of individual layers using a flexible divider and steel tape.
    • Requires the test area to be sufficiently moist for clean cutting.
    • Surface smoothness must be within 2 mm under a 1 m straight edge before measuring.
    • Results are averaged from multiple measurements to determine the mean thickness.
  • Method 2 – Floating Disc Method:

    • Designed for quick, on-site thickness assessments of loose particulate mineral surfaces.
    • Involves excavating a hole and placing a floating disc on a straight edge laid across the excavation.
    • The thickness is calculated subtracting the straight edge thickness from measured probe distances.
    • Suitable for areas where multiple rapid checks are needed; however, it is less precise than Method 1.
    • Surface leveling within 2 mm under a 1 m straight edge is necessary to ensure reliable readings.
  • Testing Conditions and Reporting:

    • Both methods require moist test areas to enable accurate excavation and measurement.
    • Test reports must include reference to EN 14953, material types, test site conditions, measurement data, and surface smoothness details.

Applications

The EN 14953:2005 standard applies primarily to:

  • Outdoor Sports Facilities: Verifying the depth of mineral surfacing layers on playing fields, running tracks, tennis courts, and other athletic surfaces.
  • Construction Quality Control: Ensuring that constructed surfaces meet design specifications for layer thickness to provide stability, drainage, and athlete safety.
  • Maintenance and Inspection: Routine thickness checks to identify wear or compaction changes that might affect performance or cause safety hazards.
  • Laboratory Testing: Detailed profile analysis of mineral surface samples to support product development and quality assurance.

By following this standard, sports facility managers and contractors can maintain optimal surface conditions, enhancing athletic performance and longevity of sports areas.

Related Standards

EN 14953:2005 complements other standards related to sports surface design and testing, including:

  • EN 14808 – Shock absorption measurement of sports surfaces.
  • EN 13036-4 – Measurement of surface evenness.
  • EN 12235 – Artificial sports surfaces – standard methods for measurement and performance requirements.

Together, these standards create a comprehensive framework that supports the construction and maintenance of safe, high-quality outdoor sports areas.
