Overview

EN 15039:2014 (CEN) specifies requirements for polycarboxylic acids and salts used as antiscalants for membranes in the treatment of water intended for human consumption. The standard describes product identification, commercial forms (aqueous solutions, granules, powders), key physical and chemical properties, purity criteria, sampling and analytical methods, and information on labelling, transport and storage. It replaces EN 15039:2006 and aligns safety labelling with Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and identification
    • Applies to homopolymers (e.g., polyacrylic, polymethacrylic, polymaleic, polyaspartic acids) and relevant copolymers and salts used as membrane antiscalants.
    • Typical relative molecular mass: < 100 000 g·mol⁻¹.
  • Physical & chemical properties
    • Available as aqueous solutions (active matter 20–50% by mass) or solids (polymer content 85–100%).
    • Soluble/miscible in water; 1% aqueous solution pH range ≈ 2–11 (product-dependent).
  • Purity and impurity limits
    • Residual monomer (acrylic acid) ≤ 1 500 mg/kg (dry product).
    • Specified maximums for trace contaminants (mg/kg dry product): Antimony (Sb) 3; Arsenic (As) 3; Cadmium (Cd) 3; Chromium (Cr) 10; Cyanide (CN–) 5; Lead (Pb) 10; Mercury (Hg) 1; Nickel (Ni) 10; Selenium (Se) 3.
  • Analytical and sampling methods
    • Normative references include standard methods for water for laboratory use and element determinations (EN ISO 3696; ICP-OES, AAS, hydride techniques, etc.).
    • Annex B provides analytical procedures for dry solids, acrylic acid and product quality assessment.
    • Sampling guidance references ISO 3165, ISO 6206 and ISO 8213.
  • Labelling, transport and storage
    • Labelling and safety information follow EU CLP requirements; guidance on means of delivery, marking and storage provided.

Applications and users

  • Primary users:
    • Water utilities and operators of membrane systems (RO, NF, UF)
    • Chemical manufacturers and suppliers of antiscalants
    • Analytical laboratories performing conformity testing and quality control
    • Procurement officers, membrane system designers and regulators
  • Practical use:
    • Selection and quality control of polycarboxylic antiscalants to limit membrane scaling while ensuring compliance with drinking-water treatment requirements.
    • Specification in procurement contracts and product certificates of analysis.

Related standards and notes

  • Related normative references cited within EN 15039:2014: EN ISO 3696, EN ISO 11885 (ICP‑OES), ISO methods for AAS and hydride techniques.
  • Safety labelling: Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP).
  • Note: Conformity with EN 15039:2014 does not automatically imply regulatory approval for use in every EU/EFTA Member State; check national regulations before application.

Otherwise, proceed as described in 5.1.3.1.1.3. 5.1.3.1.1.3 Examine the surface of the liquid. If there are signs of surface contamination, take samples from the surface as described in 5.1.3.1.2; otherwise, take samples as described in 5.1.3.1.3. 5.1.3.1.2 Surface sampling Take a sample using a suitable ladle. Lower the ladle into the liquid until the rim is just below the surface, so that the surface layer runs into it. Withdraw the ladle just before it fills completely and allow any liquid adhering to the ladle to drain off. If necessary, repeat this operation so that, when the other selected containers have been sampled in a similar manner, the total volume of sample required for subsequent analysis is obtained. 5.1.3.1.3 Bottom sampling SIST EN 15039:2014
