Overview
EN 3645-006:2015 is a CEN product standard for protective covers for receptacles used with aerospace circular electrical connectors. It applies to the family of scoop-proof, circular connectors with triple start threaded coupling and continuous operating temperatures of 175 °C or 200 °C. The standard defines the characteristics, dimensions, materials and marking rules for receptacle protective covers and is compatible with connector models derived from MIL‑DTL‑38999/33 (models W, F, K and Z).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability: Covers protective covers for receptacles in the EN 3645 connector family (models listed in Table 2).
- Dimensions and tolerances: Detailed dimensional requirements (in millimetres) and mass limits for shell sizes 09–25 (shell size codes A–J). Internal thread is specified as Class 2B.
- Materials and surface treatment: Model-dependent material/specification options (examples: cadmium-plated aluminium, nickel-plated aluminium, passivated corrosion resisting steel, zinc‑nickel plated aluminium). Maximum continuous operating temperatures are 175 °C (models W, Z) and 200 °C (models F, K).
- Environmental resistance: Example: model W specified with salt spray resistance 500 h. Sealing gasket requirements (bonded or mechanically retained) are defined.
- Attachment and retention: Types of attachment include stainless steel chain or rope with PTFE jacket and eyelet or ring; fastener hardware details ensure free rotation of chain/rope.
- Designation and marking: Prescribed designation format and marking per EN 3645-001; includes protective cover code, shell size code and attachment type.
- Referenced specifications: Electrical, mechanical and climatic requirements are covered via linkage to EN 3645-002 and the technical/specification parts EN 3645-001.
Applications and users
Practical uses:
- Protecting receptacle interfaces during storage, transport, maintenance and ground handling.
- Preserving connector integrity in high‑temperature aerospace environments (engines, thermal areas).
- Preventing contamination, corrosion and mechanical damage to critical connector receptacles.
Who uses EN 3645-006:2015:
- Connector manufacturers and component designers.
- Aerospace OEMs and suppliers specifying connector accessories.
- Procurement and quality assurance teams verifying compliance.
- MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) operations and avionics technicians.
Related standards
