Overview

EN 4611-002:2018 is a European Standard from CEN that defines the general characteristics and product-list framework for the XLETFE family of aerospace electrical cables. It covers single- and multicore, general-purpose cables intended for on-board aircraft electrical systems. Key published limits include operating temperatures between –65 °C and 135 °C (and up to 150 °C depending on conductor type), and a voltage rating of 600 V rms at sea level. The insulation system described has established use in aerospace systems such as 115 V AC (phase-to-neutral) 400 Hz and 28 V DC; verifying use in other electrical systems remains the user’s responsibility.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and applicability
    • Defines common characteristics for XLETFE family cables used in aircraft on-board electrical systems.
  • Temperature and voltage ratings
    • Operating temperature range: –65 °C to 135 °C (some conductor types to 150 °C).
    • Voltage rating: 600 V rms at sea level.
  • Materials and construction
    • Conductors: copper or copper alloy, with tin, silver or nickel plating where specified (per ISO 2635).
    • Core counts are standardized with coded designations (A–K for 1–10 cores).
  • Identification and marking
    • Manufacturer marking must follow EN 2084; shorter designations for engineering drawings are referenced in TR 6058.
    • Cables must be UV laser printable for user-applied markings in accordance with EN 3838; aggressive marking methods are not permitted.
  • Testing and technical specs
    • Test methods and definitions reference EN 3475-100 and product-specific parts for detailed technical requirements.

Applications

EN 4611-002:2018 is intended for use where reliable, standardized electrical cables are required in aerospace on-board systems:

  • Aircraft wiring harnesses and general-purpose signal/power distribution
  • Avionics and equipment interconnects designed around 115 V AC (400 Hz) or 28 V DC systems
  • Environments requiring temperature resistance from extreme cold to elevated temperatures and strict marking/traceability

Who should use this standard

  • Aerospace cable manufacturers and material suppliers
  • Aircraft OEMs and wiring harness designers
  • Avionics engineers and systems integrators
  • Maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) organizations and certification authorities specifying or verifying cable selection

Related standards

  • EN 2084 - Cable technical specification
  • EN 3475-100 - Aircraft cable test methods (general)
  • EN 3838 - Requirements for user-applied markings on aircraft cables
  • ISO 2635 - Conductors for aircraft electrical cables (dimensions & characteristics)
  • TR 6058 - Cable code identification list
  • EN 4611-series (Parts 003–009) - Product standards for specific conductor platings, construction types and application environments (tin, silver, nickel plated variants; single/dual extrusion; special protection variants)

EN 4611-002 provides the baseline framework for specifying XLETFE aerospace cables, ensuring material, marking and thermal/voltage performance consistency across the family while linking to product-specific parts and established test methods.
