Overview
EN 13183-3:2005 is a CEN European standard that specifies a non-destructive capacitance method for estimating the moisture content of individual pieces of sawn timber (including planed or surfaced timber). The standard defines how capacitance moisture meters - both hand-held and in-line systems - shall be configured, tested and used to derive reliable moisture content estimates for timber pieces with moisture contents roughly between 7% and 30%.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Limits of application
- Suitable for estimating average moisture content in the approximate range 7%–30%.
- Surface treatments (preservatives, flame retardants, chemicals) can affect readings and require special calibration.
- Equipment requirements
- Hand-held meters: flat condensator plate, surface spring electrodes or non‑invasive probes, graduated to at least 30% with 1% resolution.
- In-line systems: fixed framework with one or more sensing units, evaluation unit, shielding against electromagnetic interference, and read-out to 1% resolution.
- Measurement procedure
- Follow manufacturer instructions and use a check block to verify basic settings.
- Adjust for wood density or use supplier tables; ensure instrument is suitable for the board thickness.
- Avoid air gaps and measure on a defect-free point (normally 300 mm from an end; mid-length if piece <600 mm).
- Calibration & initial type testing
- Initial type testing must follow Annex A and be performed by a laboratory compliant with EN ISO/IEC 17025.
- In-line systems require calibration using oven-dry reference measurements (EN 13183-1) and linear regression to store measurement programs per species/dimension.
- Accuracy reporting
- Results expressed to the nearest 1 percentage point.
- Annex A prescribes sample sizes, species selection and statistical reporting (mean, standard deviation) across defined moisture classes.
Applications and who uses it
- Practical for lumber mills, quality control labs, timber traders, builders and restoration specialists who need rapid, non-destructive timber moisture estimates.
- Used in production lines (in-line) for process control and sorting, and in-field or workshop checks (hand-held) for incoming/outgoing inspections.
- Supports moisture management for drying processes, machining, storage, and end-use performance (e.g., minimizing shrinkage, warping or biological risk).

4 Moisture content estimation with hand-held capacitance moisture meters
4.1 Limits of application
This method is suitable for estimating the average moisture content of a piece of timber having a moisture
content between approximately 7 % and 30 %.
NOTE Any type of bipolar preservative, flame retardant, chemical or surface treatment may affect the accuracy of the
measurement and requires special calibration of the instrument for each type of treatment.
The estimated moisture content can be strongly affected by the type and reach of the moisture sensing system, the
moisture content distribution and the wood density under the sensor, the operating modus, the dimensions of the piece of
timber to be measured and the operator skills.
Any air gap between the timber surface and the sensing unit will strongly influence the reading. Very rough sawn or
uneven surfaces can only be measured if the shape of the condensator plate or probe secures good contact.
4.2 Apparatus
Hand-held capacitance moisture meter equipped with a flat shaped condensator plate surface, surface spring
electrode
