Overview
EN ISO 5211:2023 - "Industrial valves - Part-turn actuator attachments" (adopted by CEN) defines the mechanical interface between part-turn actuators (with or without gearboxes) and industrial valves. The standard specifies flange geometries, driving-component dimensions, and reference torque values for common valve–actuator interfaces to ensure consistent, repeatable mounting and safe torque transmission. Attachment details between supplier and purchaser remain subject to agreement; the standard does not cover the attachment of intermediate supports to the valve.
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
- Flange dimensions and hole patterns: Defines standard flange sizes, bolt/stud hole spacing and clearance hole requirements (references ISO 273). Flanges are sized by standard designations (e.g., F03…F100).
- Maximum flange torque values: Table of maximum transmissible flange torques (examples):
- F03 - 32 N·m
- F10 - 500 N·m
- F25 - 8 000 N·m
- F100 - 1 000 000 N·m These values are calculated for bolts in tension at 290 MPa and a friction coefficient of 0.2 (see Annex A for calculation explanation).
- Driving component interfaces: Detailed dimensions for common drive types used to couple actuator to driven component, including:
- Keys and keyways (with new dimensions/tolerances in Annex B)
- Parallel or diagonal square head drives
- Flat head and improved flat head drives
- Involute splines (reference to ISO 4156-1) and bi-square drives
- Positioning and dowel pins: Requirements for driven-component position at the interface and provisions for dowel pins to ensure repeatable alignment.
- Designation and torque reference values: Rules for designation of flange types and reference torque figures for couplings matching the specified interfaces.
Practical Applications and Users
This standard is essential for:
- Valve manufacturers and actuator suppliers designing compatible mounting interfaces
- OEMs and engineers specifying valve-actuator assemblies for plants (oil & gas, water, power, chemical, HVAC)
- Procurement teams ensuring interchangeable mounts and correct torque ratings
- Maintenance and inspection teams verifying proper actuator attachment and alignment
- Testing laboratories and conformity assessors checking interface compliance
Benefits include reduced design rework, easier actuator interchangeability, safer torque transmission, and clearer supplier–purchaser expectations.

The values specified in Table 1 have been defined on the basis of bolts in tension only at a stress of
290 MPa and a coefficient of friction of 0,2 between the mounting interface. All variations in these
defined parameters lead to variations of the transmittable torque values. See Annex A for more details
on the calculation method.
ISO 5211:2023(E)
The selection of flange types for a particular application should take into account the additional torques
that may be generated because of inertia or other factors.
5 Flange dimensions
Flanges for part-turn actuator attachments shall comply with the dimensions shown in Figure 2 and
given in Table 2. The method of attachment shall be by means of studs, screws or through bolting. When
through bolting is used, the diameter of the clearance holes shall permit the use of bolts of a size given
by the corresponding dimension d in Table 2.
Holes for the studs, screws or bolts shall be equi-spaced and positioned off-centre (see Figure 3 and
Table 3) and shall conform to the requirements of ISO 273.
The flange on the valve shall have a recess corresponding to the diameter d . A spigot on the part-turn
actuator is optional.
The minimum values for dimension h shown in Table 2 apply to flanges having material of proof stress
R ≥ 200 MPa. The minimum values for dimension h applied to flanges having materials of proof stress
e 2
R ≤ 200 MPa shall be agreed between manufacturer and purchaser. The minimum values for dimension
e
h shall be at least 1 × d .
3 4
Dimension d has been based on providing sufficient landing for the nuts and bolt heads where
applicable. Such landing is defined as a radius from the bolt hole centre with the dimension (d − d ) / 2,
1 3
and is a minimum. The flange shape of both valve and actuator outside these areas of landing is left to
the option of the manufacturer.
The dimensions and bolting material are based on bolts in tension at a maximum stress of 290 MPa. On
agreement, between the manufacturer/supplier and purchaser, bolting material with different tensile
strength can be used, with no dimensional changes but with potential variation of the transmittable
torque.
Above flange type F60 alternative dimensions and/or torque ratings may be used on agreement
between manufacturer/supplier and purchaser.

EXAMPLE
ISO 5211 – F05 Y – V – 18, identifies a part-turn valve actuator attachment in accordance with this
document, with F05 flange type, spigot and single-key drive with 18 mm diameter.
NOTE The designation is not a marking requirement.
7 Dimensions and torques
7.1 General
To ensure that no interference can occur between the driving component and the driven component,
the length of the driven component above the interface shall be limited so that there is a clearance
between both parts.
The depth of engagement of the valve driven component into the actuator drive component and the
surface area of contact between the faces of the actuator drive component and the faces of the valve
driven component should be considered to ensure that the stresses caused by contact do not exceed
the capability of the component materials. In some cases, it may be necessary to use materials with
superior mechanical properties and/or to reduce the output torque of the actuator.
7.2 Drive by key(s)
Dimensions of the drive components for key drive shall meet the requirements of Figure 4 and Table 4.
The values of d , h and l in Table 4 are based on single-key design up to 98 mm shaft diameter.
7 4 5
Where more than one key is required to transmit the torque, the dimensions in Table 4 shall still apply.
The key dimensions shall conform with those given in Annex B.
The keyway(s) in the driving component shall correspond to the position of the key(s) supplied on the
driven component as specified in 8.1, Figures 11, 12 or 13.
The key(s) shall be secured in position by suitable means.

The EN ISO 5211:2023 standard provides a comprehensive framework for the attachment of part-turn actuators to industrial valves, thereby enhancing the efficiency and reliability of such connections. It outlines specific requirements that ensure a standardized approach, thereby promoting interoperability among various valve and actuator manufacturers. One of the notable strengths of this document is its focus on flange dimensions necessary for the secure attachment of part-turn actuators to industrial valves. By defining these dimensions, organizations can reduce compatibility issues and streamline the procurement process, ultimately leading to reduced downtime during installation and maintenance. Additionally, the standard specifies driving component dimensions, which are crucial for the successful coupling of actuators to their respective driven components. The clarity provided in these specifications not only facilitates easier integration but also supports engineering teams in ensuring that the components work effectively together under operational conditions. Moreover, the inclusion of reference values for torques associated with the interfaces and couplings serves as a valuable resource for engineers. It aids them in selecting the appropriate actuators and anticipating performance parameters, which is essential for maintaining the longevity and efficiency of the valve systems. Although the document delineates a clear scope regarding the attachment of actuators, it is important to note that the attachment of the intermediate support to the valve falls outside of its purview. This aspect may require further consideration depending on specific project needs, but it does not detract from the standard's overall utility. In summary, the EN ISO 5211:2023 standard is a pertinent and well-structured reference that effectively addresses the crucial aspects of attaching part-turn actuators to industrial valves. Its emphasis on standardized dimensions, torque values, and procedural clarity positions it as a vital tool for manufacturers and engineering professionals in the field.
